a practical bug out bag....
    #18869566 - 09/20/13 08:49 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

not necessarily a BOB, but what are some food items that have a decent shelf life that offer the daily shit you need?

i was talking with my chick and we are going to slowly start building up a supply. you know, here and there type shit. any suggestions on foods, tools, first aid shit.

just to keep in mind, we dont make a shit load of money so we cant run out and spend 600.00 on shit.

we are more of a here and there type people.

beans, rice, peanut butter, dried meat (jerky), honey - all stay for very long times if stored properly. vitamins
canned food has a long shelf life. But cannot be carried generally, so that's more for a home "emergency food" kit. For bunkering in as opposed to bugging out.
MREs, Freeze dried food meals (mountain house, etc)

If I were to do this I would search for things that can never go bad and a lot of water and water filter systems/cleaners and a distiller.

Yeah it was a bit expensive. But its been evolving for 5+ years so it's not like I bought all the stuff at once... a bit here and there.

some of those emergency blankets that cause cancer may be good to:thumbup: maybe a few waterskins and water purifying tablets or a nice filter until just until you find a clean water source. also you can never go wrong with a nice knife or leathermen and a compas maybe even an atlas.

I like having options. I can bunker in or bug out depending on the scenario.
That's why I leave my "bug out bag" at home, so I can use it there if needed, or grab and go.
I also have tons of stored water, long term storage food and other supplies at home for 'bunkering in".
Also have a "get home bag" in my car

Are you talking food that you can store in case of a disaster or some shit?

If so, call around to some military surplus stores and ask if they have MREs and how much.

The military surplus store sold me a ton of them for $1 a piece and they are full meals. They were made in the 70s but have a life of 100 years. I ate one and it honestly wasn't bad at all. I would have paid 2-3$ a piece for those, it's worth it and they take up as much space as a video tape and they give you tobasco sauce.

You sure about that man? Most MREs I have ever seen only have a viable shelf life of around 5 years at normal room temps.
They are definitely a good option. I have two cases for emergencies. But I've never seen any MRE that advertises longer than a 3-5 year shelf life. I guess if you are freezing them they could probably be viable for ~20 years.

Freeze dried food in vacuum sealed mylar generally has a 20-25 year shelf life

that was what the dude told me. he also said it's possible that some of them could be bad, and if the plastic has expanded with gas then to throw it out.

They show the manufacture date and it's from the 70s. He said they can last a 100 years if I keep them stored in a cool place. The one I ate was fine, the chicken was pretty shitty and dry but all the dry food tasted fine, maybe a little stale.

Yeah man.. temperature plays a big impact. If stored at freezing temps, I could see them staying viable for a long time (maybe 10-20 years).

But most MREs advertise a 3-5 year shelf life at normal temps. Or like 6 months at really hot temps.
I've never heard of any with a 100 year shelf life

Although I have heard of people eating MREs made in the 70s. But not really sure about that.

I wouldn't want to eat an 8 year old MRE, they taste like complete shit fresh out of the factory.  They aren't cheap either, I would suggest other options.

Brand of MRE makes a big difference. I don't like a lot of the commercially produced ones for civilians
http://www.mealkitsupply.com/ makes the best tasting ones I have found.

But ya they are relatively expensive. But it's a good option for emergency food.
I like having multiple forms of emergency food, MREs, freeze dried food (which is even more expensive than MREs), rice&beans and honey and whatnot.

Same here. Along with water, and various tools/rope/tarp/first aid kit/etc etc etc as a "get home bag" or when shit hits the fan and I'm stranded and need to survive. Happened once before and that shit came in super handy.
