Are fucking awesome.
I'm currently on an M17x R3 with 12 gigs of ram and a 6970.
I was running Bioshock Infinite on Very High/Ultra (mixed) yesterday and when I closed it down after a few-hour power-session, I noticed that I also had Skyrim running on Ultra in the background.
Thing's a fucking beast and is gonna last me years!
Had an M11x but some section 8 crud stole it. They're going to live their lives in poverty and get chased around by the KKK though so it's okay, although stealing my iPad the next weekend was a bit much.
Anyone else an Alienware fan? What AlienFX colors do you have yours set to (laptop users).
I used to be such a Mac fanboy, but damn...
The only downside is this thing does get hot... I have a blistered burn on my stomach from gaming with it laying on me. I should have paid attention to the searing pain but I was so into Bioshock I couldn't be bothered lol.

QFT, Amen on console games.
Super computer is right. I justified buying this for scientific computing early this year, and I'm just now making good on that but it's SOOO nice not to have the overhead of a slow computer when you're trying to figure shit out.
And it plays games so well too

Get it used like I did... it's quite possibly the most computing power you can get for your buck.

i mean it's much much cheaper to just put your own computer together. there are a number of people who will do it for you for a small fee, which STILL comes out cheaper than if you would have bought that same hardware anywhere else. i agree though, i love me an alienware.
+1 for bioshock by the way, how is Infinite? i haven't played it yet.

LAPTOPS, dude hehe. The desktops are fucking amazing too, but they're SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE for what you get compared to just buying and assembling the shit yourself. You do get some convenience though, and a LOT of compu-swag, but at a premium of course.
My Alienware was the best $1200-ish I ever spent, and it came with 2 Razor mice and 2 chargers, so that was like getting $250-ish back right off the bat. And with the tippy-top (before it's sequels...) shelf graphics card (that sounded gay... "tippy" ), 12 gigs, a decent quad-core, INTEGRATED WIRELESS HD, HDMI input (bye bye, TV), blu ray, 5.1 klipsch built in, I mean frankly you wouldn't even be saving much on a desktop.
A new Alienware is a totally different story though.
Infinite is fucking KILLER dude. TORRENT IT NAO
Graphics are killer and it's got a VERY neat twist to its negative-utopia that I didn't anticipate. You also have a noncombatant companion for most of the game who helps you out by giving you ammo and health she finds (and "salts" for "vigors"/powers, the plasmid replacement) just in the nick of time, like when you're dying or running low on bullets in a fight.
Tosses you money randomly too.
ITS SO FUCKING GOOD.

I found it a little disappointing compared to the earlier games in some ways, the vigors and weapons were kind of lackluster and most of the hats and shit were pretty useless. Still a great game overall though and the artwork and story were killer.

yeah, it was a step back from Bioshock, but i think there was an overarching point here...
the new Bioshock Infinite game was made to be a major story telling premise, with basically what i'd call a stripped down version of the original Bioshock, gameplay wise.
but i think it was ok, because it kinda goes to show how to progress in one department (the story telling) you have to make room in other department (gameplay) when the game is, in particular, an FPS.
i love FPS, and i find that BS:I was a telling game on how much FPS is on it's "last legs", so to speak, gameplay-wise... that it's a telling game on how FPS only has so much of a stretch with what i can actually do with original gameplay; yet take that sorta "limited subset" of gameplay derivatives and formulate it around a extraordinarily well done story.

i'd have to say the original bioshock is one of my favorite game's.
but akira, are you saying that the game play is lacking because they focus more on the storyline?

yeah, basically. i mean, they could have made a game that tips the scale in gameplay options, but then it'd have no room to just be an FPS game, with a good story. id' be some "experiment".

Yeah they would have had to devote a lot of manpower and money into developing the art and story. The first two games were more RPG like I found, you could custom build your character to suit your style of play and the magic was powerful enough to get by without using weapons a lot of the time (or just magic and the meelee weapon.) In Infinite the fact that you could not carry magic powerups really limited things. Bioshock 1 and 2 sort of mesh together in my mind but I remember there were some really cool abilities in 2 if you researched the enemies fully (invisibility, magic recharges when you stand in water, etc.) The enemies in the first two games were more interesting and challenging for the most part too.

yeah, it was. the RPG elements what really made it for me. it reminded me obviously of the original System Shock; while Infinite had noone of those elements.

I never played the first System Shock but I remember the second one having some very different character builds possible. I should see if I can get that game again, I remember it being a little tricky to set up on Windows 7 though.

Supposed to be one of the scariest games of all time (it and Half-Life tend to take number one among the, well... "not kiddie" compilations/top # lists).
I have a vintage copy I started playing on a Win98 laptop with a 2mb video card... I'd love to dig that up now.
The original system shock was just another game, but it was lauded for it's environment as I recall, and how the developers really thought of a lot of realism-abetting touches such as elevator music.

You couldn't have built the M17x laptop I have with all (or even pretty similar) hardware for less than I paid for it, at least at the time and even if I'm wrong, the margin would only be a hundred or two dollars.
Factor in getting a monitor (and factor out all the bonus goodies in my purchase price), and frankly there's no way to get more computing power for your dollar.
They're overpriced. That's why people like me buy them used, and when purchased USED they are one of the best deals available.
