oyster&chicken i.d. plz.
    #18868471 - 09/20/13 04:20 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Yesterday i thanked all those who have helped me i.d. mushies on this forum, today i found these babies. i live on crowleys ridge in n.e.arkansas, and these were found in a heavy mixed forest.

the first was on an oak log over a some times dry creek bed.  Smell like some sort of sea food.  they were wet when picked, and there seems to be some yellowish fluid or staining.  the smell was very destinctive.  gotta be oysters,

the second is huge, weighs alot, and was growing out of the ground near the base of an oak. i'm guessing some sort of laetiporus

NICE finds! Wait for a TI before consuming  Im not a TI but IMO (please dont be mad for me guessing TIs) is that the oysters look just lke the ones I had positively IDed on here before. They taste great (of thats what they are)! The second one looks like an aged polyporus squasmosis?:mushroom2: the squasmosis if thats what it is are edible when younger but just the outer edges

I think I have some of this growing on my contaminated spawn logs. I dunno, there are a bunch of things growing on those logs instead of the tasty ones... my logs are in a bad spot, need to find a better location... too much other compost action where they're at.

no, my other logs.... I did shiitake, lions mane and chicken of the woods... my lions mane and chickens both got contaminated... the shiitake logs are the only clean logs so far... bad spot, right below where my BF tosses our compost and BBQ ash off the deck.... gets rained on by all kinds of debris... stupid. lame. BF. bleh.

psh. ive seen you toss stuff off the deck too. i say hurry up and move back down here so we can hunt more frequently.

also i interviewed my ex gfs mom the other day and she gave me tons of locations to hit up for hunting. she was a big hunter with her ex husband from like 1980-1995

and it was awesome chatting with her

But when I toss, I clear the logs!

I am not responsible for all the ash building up on my logs.

Awesome on the exGFsMom...
If the areas are local, I have hunted most everywhere in your area.
Lots to be found, lots of other hunters too.
Big reason why I have reverted to solo hikes and secret rural locals.
I find myself searching for corners of virgin forest.
When i don't see another person crawling around in the bushes for miles, then I know I have found a good spot...
Almost anywhere you can look you are likely to find a mushroom.

nah she never hunted our area

yeah there are some pretty secret spots i have found here that nobody has hunted

but i also like bringing people hunting with me. its fun to go solo and much more rewarding. but i like a conversation sometimes too. and sometimes when im texting you from the woods solo thats good enough. other times it isnt.

plus two people equals more space for carrying back stuff and my additional books for tree iding and now the audobon field guide.

but she said she imagines the area she's suggesting/is willing to hunt with me at might be pretty heavily hunted nowadays. she said she was on the cusp on the hunting culture and left when it got pretty popular.  but she told me of some good hedgehog, morel, chanterelle, and porcini spots

i still want you to train me to id cyans. thatd make me very happy

also i want to hunt with you now bc i have a much better understanding of mushrooms and identification abilities since our first hunt, so now what you say and observe in the field will better my abilities i feel.

We can hunt, but like I said before, I would prefer going somewhere away from home turf, somewhere neither one of us has been and likely wont go again... that way its fair.... if we find a giant amazing patch of tasty treats, then unless we harvest together each year, we will end up competing with one another... which sucks... the bigger the group you take, the more attention it draws, and the more damage that is done to the habitats.. solo is more controlled and less likely to be competition... but there's always other hunters out there.. at this point, almost no ground is virgin... and the ground that is must be hard to get to... or just dangerous....

Its a bad time of year to be wondering off deep into the forests... dangerous time of year in my area, and north of.

In about a month or so things will be calmed down and it should be a bit safer to venture into certain areas....
