Are fucking awesome.
I'm currently on an M17x R3 with 12 gigs of ram and a 6970.
I was running Bioshock Infinite on Very High/Ultra (mixed) yesterday and when I closed it down after a few-hour power-session, I noticed that I also had Skyrim running on Ultra in the background.
Thing's a fucking beast and is gonna last me years!
Had an M11x but some section 8 crud stole it. They're going to live their lives in poverty and get chased around by the KKK though so it's okay, although stealing my iPad the next weekend was a bit much.
Anyone else an Alienware fan? What AlienFX colors do you have yours set to (laptop users).
I used to be such a Mac fanboy, but damn...
The only downside is this thing does get hot... I have a blistered burn on my stomach from gaming with it laying on me. I should have paid attention to the searing pain but I was so into Bioshock I couldn't be bothered lol.

QFT, Amen on console games.
Super computer is right. I justified buying this for scientific computing early this year, and I'm just now making good on that but it's SOOO nice not to have the overhead of a slow computer when you're trying to figure shit out.
And it plays games so well too

Get it used like I did... it's quite possibly the most computing power you can get for your buck.

i mean it's much much cheaper to just put your own computer together. there are a number of people who will do it for you for a small fee, which STILL comes out cheaper than if you would have bought that same hardware anywhere else. i agree though, i love me an alienware.
+1 for bioshock by the way, how is Infinite? i haven't played it yet.

LAPTOPS, dude hehe. The desktops are fucking amazing too, but they're SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE for what you get compared to just buying and assembling the shit yourself. You do get some convenience though, and a LOT of compu-swag, but at a premium of course.
My Alienware was the best $1200-ish I ever spent, and it came with 2 Razor mice and 2 chargers, so that was like getting $250-ish back right off the bat. And with the tippy-top (before it's sequels...) shelf graphics card (that sounded gay... "tippy" ), 12 gigs, a decent quad-core, INTEGRATED WIRELESS HD, HDMI input (bye bye, TV), blu ray, 5.1 klipsch built in, I mean frankly you wouldn't even be saving much on a desktop.
A new Alienware is a totally different story though.
Infinite is fucking KILLER dude. TORRENT IT NAO
Graphics are killer and it's got a VERY neat twist to its negative-utopia that I didn't anticipate. You also have a noncombatant companion for most of the game who helps you out by giving you ammo and health she finds (and "salts" for "vigors"/powers, the plasmid replacement) just in the nick of time, like when you're dying or running low on bullets in a fight.
Tosses you money randomly too.
ITS SO FUCKING GOOD.

I found it a little disappointing compared to the earlier games in some ways, the vigors and weapons were kind of lackluster and most of the hats and shit were pretty useless. Still a great game overall though and the artwork and story were killer.

yeah, it was a step back from Bioshock, but i think there was an overarching point here...
the new Bioshock Infinite game was made to be a major story telling premise, with basically what i'd call a stripped down version of the original Bioshock, gameplay wise.
but i think it was ok, because it kinda goes to show how to progress in one department (the story telling) you have to make room in other department (gameplay) when the game is, in particular, an FPS.
i love FPS, and i find that BS:I was a telling game on how much FPS is on it's "last legs", so to speak, gameplay-wise... that it's a telling game on how FPS only has so much of a stretch with what i can actually do with original gameplay; yet take that sorta "limited subset" of gameplay derivatives and formulate it around a extraordinarily well done story.

i'd have to say the original bioshock is one of my favorite game's.
but akira, are you saying that the game play is lacking because they focus more on the storyline?

yeah, basically. i mean, they could have made a game that tips the scale in gameplay options, but then it'd have no room to just be an FPS game, with a good story. id' be some "experiment".

Yeah they would have had to devote a lot of manpower and money into developing the art and story. The first two games were more RPG like I found, you could custom build your character to suit your style of play and the magic was powerful enough to get by without using weapons a lot of the time (or just magic and the meelee weapon.) In Infinite the fact that you could not carry magic powerups really limited things. Bioshock 1 and 2 sort of mesh together in my mind but I remember there were some really cool abilities in 2 if you researched the enemies fully (invisibility, magic recharges when you stand in water, etc.) The enemies in the first two games were more interesting and challenging for the most part too.

yeah, it was. the RPG elements what really made it for me. it reminded me obviously of the original System Shock; while Infinite had noone of those elements.

I never played the first System Shock but I remember the second one having some very different character builds possible. I should see if I can get that game again, I remember it being a little tricky to set up on Windows 7 though.

Supposed to be one of the scariest games of all time (it and Half-Life tend to take number one among the, well... "not kiddie" compilations/top # lists).
I have a vintage copy I started playing on a Win98 laptop with a 2mb video card... I'd love to dig that up now.
The original system shock was just another game, but it was lauded for it's environment as I recall, and how the developers really thought of a lot of realism-abetting touches such as elevator music.

You couldn't have built the M17x laptop I have with all (or even pretty similar) hardware for less than I paid for it, at least at the time and even if I'm wrong, the margin would only be a hundred or two dollars.
Factor in getting a monitor (and factor out all the bonus goodies in my purchase price), and frankly there's no way to get more computing power for your dollar.
They're overpriced. That's why people like me buy them used, and when purchased USED they are one of the best deals available.

Alienware = Ridiculously Overpriced. Also owned by Dell now. You can build the same exact specs in any alienware system for a lot less than what Dell charges.
They used to be a lot better 6-7 years ago, before being bought out by Dell.. but still WAY overpriced for what you get.

Not worthless.. you just have to spend like 1500-2000 to get a decent GAMING laptop. And spending that same amount on a custom build desktop will net you roughly 2-3x the performance of that laptop.

Yeah, not saying there isn't a better choice. But every time a alienware laptop thread pops up, everyone says how cheaper it is to build one.
I have a alienware mouse pad. I had an idiot roomate/good friend drop almost 6 grand on a alien ware computer about 9 years ago. His ass doesn't own any part of that now a days. Stupid bulky plastic case and components that are not worth a dime today.

It's a niche market. It won't ever be as good as a desktop, but it would be good enough for most games at a decent resolution.
Me I would never buy an expensive laptop. Something cheap and protable oh yeah, something heavy and huge that doesn't move... that's where I will game from.

The graphics card's your main concern, but just about anything using the original (and still formidable!) Source engine would almost certainly be within your reach, particularly (or perhaps only) with low graphics settings.
This gets you: -CounterStrike: Source -Half Life 2 & Episodes 1 & 2 -Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 -Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
And many, MANY more.
GTA San Andreas is probably a safe bet, as is Oblivion or at least Morrowind.
For more casual fare, Mine craft would be an especially certain option.
And you know what? Battlefield 1942 is still Fun. As. Fuck.
Vaios are VERY sleek personal and executive laptops. The first laptop I ever fell in love with was a paper-thin Vaio Pentium III machine with a docking station that added a DVD drive and more ports.

Guess you missed the part where my frail little LAPTOP was running Bioshock Infinite on Very High/Ultra ON TOP OF Skyrim running on ULTRA in the background, huh?
Most "PC Gamers'" [is that the right way to pluralize that within quotations?] desktops couldn't hold a match to the AVERAGE 17 or 18 inch laptop that Alienware ships to its customers.

Again, I advocate "used" here. There's your half off to nullify the (maybe) 2x boost-for-your-money multiplier (and 2x might be a little liberal even... especially for a higher end one like I got so lucky to acquire).Quote:

That's because it is :P
I just hate alienware.
If you must buy a prebuilt.. go with one of the better companies like Digital Storm, Origin PC, Falcon Northwest, Ibuypower, Cyberpower. You'll still pay more than building it yourself.. but cheaper than Aliencrap. Just make sure you know what you're getting. Although they generally all use high quality parts, a lot of times they will sneak in components with inferior like 1 year warranties. (Cyberpower...) when the normal components may have 3 year or lifetime.
But for the record I will gladly custom build any kind of gaming system anyone wants, for cheaper than whatever you would pay from any of the above mentioned companies.

Sorry, when I think Alienware.. I think desktop. That's always been 90% of their products
Not trolling. Just bored at work. And have a deep seated hatred for alienware
The title of the thread was Alienwares, not laptops.
Anyway, I'm glad people like their Alienwares. I just like to talk shit, fuck Dell.

I've like... never even associated Alienware with desktops. (Even though I briefly owned an Area-51 tower back in the day, also used... that fucker weighed 60 POUNDS though and was HUGE... the whole "Alien Head" case has a full ATX tower INSIDE of it, or at least close).
Said it before, but people don't read: there's just about no way you could build a desktop with very similar components to my laptop and save much, if any, money. (and ALL the components it has within reason; I realize you can't get an AlienFX keyboard but you could still sub something).
And since people aren't actually reading lately, note that I got mine USED.

Sorry. But that is just plain WRONG. I could build a desktop with BETTER SPECS for much less than you would spend on a laptop of similar specs. Desktops are always cheaper than laptops of the same specs. You are paying for smaller components and portability with laptops. I work in the PC industry and have been building PCs for 15+ years.

Monitor + HDMI in capture card + wireless HD and the gap is closed myfriend. It would still be a gaping chasm though if we were talking about the price of a new Alienware.

Again, I advocate "used" here. There's your half off to nullify the (maybe) 2x boost-for-your-money multiplier (and 2x might be a little liberal even... especially for a higher end one like I got so lucky to acquire).
this is incorrect. generally used components are close to their retail value.

Simple comparison of two simple integer quantities, the "new" price of my laptop and the "used" price of my laptop, and the hundreds-of-dollars chasm between them, debunks your nonsense.
You'd be correct that you're not going to save enough to get that new doll you want just by getting a used 790GTX in lieu of a brand-new one.

psi said: I never played the first System Shock but I remember the second one having some very different character builds possible.
I just torrented the "GOG" version of the game, runs on Win 7 at modern resolutions.

ur such a noob
here is an ebay search for used items
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=gtx+650&_dcat=27386&LH_ItemCondition=4
here is a google shopping search for the same item
https://www.google.com/search?q=gtx+650&oq=gtx+650&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l3j69i60l2.1696j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=gtx+650&tbm=shop
For sure used computer parts are a bit cheaper, but thats because with computer parts the warranty is actually valuable.
i just came to this thread to hear more about your ipad. tell me more about your ipad.
