Small Talk
    #18868036 - 09/20/13 02:39 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I have a hard time engaging in chicken shit small talk at work.

I'm nice but I don't have a whole lot to say (unless I'm going to engage in an in depth discussion about something I know about).

I don't want to be that one guy that doesn't say anything to anybody - but at the same time, I don't want to be that guy who is an open book.

I've been both before. :puke:

I don't give a shit about sports, and I don't watch T.V.

What should I talk about?

I would rather work with someone quiet who has something interesting to say sometimes. I've worked with people who spurt verbal diarrhea because they feel they need to fill the silence with inane banter.

Well I'm very introverted and in the past whenever I just went to work and didn't socialize with my co-workers they would think I was an elitist asshole. Then they would find out that I was a pretty cool guy, and then they would want to party with me. When I would party with them, my life would be an open book and my co-workers wouldn't know when to leave the "outside life" out of the work place.

I could give a few examples but usually, I could stay out partying until 5am - go home, take care of business, and be on time for work at 7am sharp. They couldn't really do that. They would come in late, usually with the same clothes on from the night before and start bragging about what we would do. Stuff like that.

Talk about being tired from too much works. Works every time and eventually people get sick of your negativity and whining they stop perceiving you as a source of smalltalk.

I feel the same way.

Unfortunately, it's that inane banter that gets you that promotion.

I'm usually the guy that does all of the work (very well) and gets none of the credit. I'm like a stagehand - always behind the scenes.

:sunspots:

That's a good idea!

Instead of saying that I'm tired of work (I don't want my hours cut) I'm going to talk about how sore I usually am from working out. Thanks for the idea - feel free to tell me more!

tell some funny jokes then.

Also, join in on the conversation at hand. Find a related story in your life that fits in with the conversation.

talk about drugs or women

talk about religion or politics

I know how to do that professionally.

I only do that when things become too political.

I guess the general rule is to not talk about sex, religion or politics at the work place - but that's like, the only thing worth talking about with strangers.

You can always prime a conversation with a remark about the weather (at least in the UK, its a predominant smalltalk topic).

I also think smalltalk is annoying, a waste of time and making me feel uncomfortable. Why don't you talk about work, I've always received recognition from my superiors cause I tend to suppress smalltalk with talk about my work.

Yeah I hate small talk too. I'm perfectly comfortable being in a room full of people without getting stuck in to the conversation or simply enjoying someone's company in silence, just sharing the space, just being. But I've realised some people find this uncomfortable for reasons I can't fathom. :justdontknow:

Small talk just seems so forced and unnatural. It doesn't flow like honest from the heart talk, it's full of awkward pauses and erms and ums and ahs. It seems to just go against the grain of the... something... in the room. That invisible thing I still don't have a word for. You probably know what I'm on about. Or maybe I'm just really tired with the flu and not making much sense.

I understand though about not wanting to be that guy who never says anything. It's a hard balance to reach, not being the creepy loner and also not forcing yourself through boring, empty conversation. Sorry I have no advice.

Well, I could talk about scandelous places I've been to. Like strip clubs that featured burly m2f transexuals and women with visible c-section scars. I could talk about a few clubs I've been to where the bathroom floors were slippery with blood. I could talk about the aborted fetus I found in the boys bathroom toilet when I was in the 6th grade - or the first time I saw a dead body in a public park.

For some reason though, people get this weird look on their face when I start laughing at those experiences, so I usually keep my mouth shut and they just think I'm some boring person.

But in the right conversation, you would be crowned king!

BTW, aren't you small talking with all of us?

I understand, and I agree with you 100%!

In fact, I couldn't have said it better myself.

How do you carry yourself?

Do people think - that you think - you're "too cool for the room" when you're just enjoying the silence?
