I was only 3 when we won the NL Championship in 93 so I couldnt really celebrate properly but we did it right when they won it a couple years back. So i get the phillies nostalgia, but why Joey Merlino? Was he that big of a household name that you think of him when you think of the 90's.?
Oh hell yeah man. Joey was the John Gotti of Philly as far as media attention went. He got off on that as much as Gotti did. The people loved him. Every Thanksgiving he would hand out tons of free turkeys, and every Christmas he'd have those Christmas parties like the one in the picture, and hand out tons of presents. The media ate it up & always covered it. Remember that this was the end of the glory days of the mob, but the mystique & interest was still there. I grew up watching coverage of mob hits, arrests & trials on the news. My dad's best friend was related to John Stanfa by marriage. My grandfather on my mom's side was a Philly beat cop, and was very friendly with Angelo Bruno (his beat was Angelo's block.) My great aunts on my dad's side were Norwegian, and lived in a norwegian assisted living home in Bensonhurst, and John Gotti would always go out of his way to talk to them, hold doors for them, etc. So I grew up steeped in mob lore, and I really looked up to those guys. So yeah, when I think of the 90s, I think of Joey & his holiday parties.

DS, you're the fucking man. For many reasons.
Yeah I've heard all the stories. Im a couple years younger so I wasnt too aware of all the media hype when it was happening but I was alive for it. South Philly loved Joey Merlino because he was good to the people.
He was too flashy and all the media attention that he craved backfired. He thought it would make him appear transparent, like he had nothing to hide but he wasnt fooling anyone.

Yeah it was the evolution of the mafia that ended in it's downfall. If they would've stuck to the old ways of flying under the radar & taking omertà seriously they would probably still be the superpower of organized crime that they used to be. A lot of the old gangsters that got popped in the 80s & early 90s will be released soon. It'll be interesting to see what happens then. Joey is in Florida now, but he was back in Philly earlier this summer for his father's funeral. There was also a mob hit earlier this year, first one that was on the news in many years.

Youre right. The newer generation of mobsters didnt have the same code of ethics, or omerta as you said, and this was ultimately their downfall.
Whos that big fat guy who turned states witness against the philly mob and still lives in the area without witness protection?
And damnit DS, that new sig of that chick saying pussy is gonna make me have to rub one out. And im expecting company any minute.
I must with the swiftness.

Ron Previte. He was a former cop that went bad & put in a lot of work enforcing & loan sharking. (Philly cops going corrupt.......nah. ) He didn't roll cause he busted either.....he did it cause the Feds paid him $6,000 a week or a month, I forget which.

I cant believe that fucker is still alive. Most people end up snitching when their back is against the wall to save their own ass but he did it just for the money?! Especially knowing first hand what happens to informants, he still made that choice. Thats ballsy.
I wonder how much they really paid him and why nobody has killed him yet?
I think we're way off topic

Yeah he just rolls around AC like nothing's wrong. I see it as an example of far the mafia has fallen. Twenty years ago he'd have disappeared.

Those jeans in question are called "crime scene" JNCO always named their jeans line. This was their 50' inch line that dealt with crime. I actually wore a pair called "Mugshot" with 5 or 6 Mugshot on the bottom pocket. "Kangaroos" were their most popular pair of jeans with a Kangaroo with boxing gloves poping out of the back pocket. Ravers of the day and today even wore "phat pants" called Kickwear that were ever larger in size.

Yes! I had anywhere between 25-50 floppy disks with pictures, and that was considered a LARGE collection Then my dreams came true when they made the zip drive, which was 100mb disks. I remember transferring all the floppies to a zip disk and deleting all the floppies. Now that I think about it, I should have dropped them all around school for other people to find... Or better yet, hide them in the woods... That would have certainly made someones day
