Okay so short and fat is what I want next time around, good to know! These were the only jars I could find, but admittedly I didn't look very hard, saw half pint and was satisfied. So what do I do if my jars stall? Do I birth and just removed the un-colonized area?

Ya it looks to be ok I don't see any Brf being exposed. From what it looks like mycelium already colonized that super cracked spot unless you are pointing out 2 different pictures. Be careful as you are trying to get the cakes out of those.

The super cracked spot on the bottom with the blurry grey stuff around it. I dont think its mycelium because its not brilliantly white and looks drasticly different from any mycelium in my jars. It also doesn't look like mold to me, more like if you very lightly sprinkled flour on a tray and misted it with water.. it looks pasty. It also hasn't grown at all since I've started keeping an eye on it.

You can try to take out the colonized part and birth it.

Have you smelled the cracked jar?

Like opened it and sniffed it? Or do you mean just smell the top where the inoculation wholes are?

Just smell through the top of the inoculation holes. If something bad is happening inside the jars you should be able to smell it. Try not to disturb the verm though

I havent noticed any type of strange smell coming from the couple jars that have that, but I'll double check when i get home.

:lahey:
Nice you should be fine then. If you think that jar has stalled outline the mycelium with a sharpie then forget about it for a couple days. See if the mycelium crossed the border lol

Thanks man, I'll give that a try if I feel the need. Right now the growth is RAPID. If I look in my closet in 6-12 hour intervals, I usually notice some growth at a glance, but that's only because 2 inoculation points are currently growing into each other on one jar, and the gap is almost closed. The others aren't nearly as obvious, but some growth is still quite rapidly noticeable.

My hope and prayer is that these guys are pinning before halloween, might be a stretch, but I can still hope!

UPDATE 9/24/13
Just some new pictures of how the guys are doing. Still only at 5 jars, hoping the last 3 pick up the pace.

So I've noticed that some of the mycelium in my jars is very "root" like (rhizomorphic right?) and some of it is extremely fluffy, while still having that "root" look just at the edges, just a lot fuzzier and smaller roots. Should also say the fluffier stuff is very brilliant white, more so than the less fluffy stuff, but that seems to be mostly cause I can see more substrate through the more rhizomorphic mycelium.

To me it all looks healthy, but I don't know what trich or cobweb look like, and I've heard they get confused sometimes. I'd put up pictures, but it all looks pretty much the same with my camera.

Oh alright good to know, I should be alright then. There is nothing that looks *drastically* different, but it's noticeable. Anyway thanks for the insight, and I'll keep an eye on it of course.

These are the latest pictures, 1 jar at 85% growth, the other 4 between 40%-75%. Only got a few pictures this time because there really isn't that much to update, aside from the fact that they're not dead yet. Also I noticed some reddish substrate on the bottom of 1 jar, but I'm 95% sure it's burnt, as I had 2 jars that were burned black on the bottom (tossed) and were reddish around the edge of the burn.

Anyway here is one jar, the guy at 85%. This line was drawn 48 hours ago (give or take 5 hours).

Here is another guy that has kind of a yellowish tinge near the center, hard to see in the picture. It's so hard to notice, I've got to wonder if it's the lighting in my room or if it's real.

Anyway, there you have it, all the excitement of September 30th wrapped up in this post.

Cheers!

Fun to watch. I am glad for you that your almost there. I have to say, make sure and smell your jars when it is time to birth them. The look like there is a little to much moisture in them and that might be the cause of the slow colonization. I like to make my jars a bit on the dryer side, and then rehydrate the mycelium once it has completely colonized the jar. I use the Dunk and Roll technique to get the moisture back in the cake.

Also I have had great success with those jars. I agree with psillyshroomer however that colonization time can be genetic dependent.

And I have to disagree with Princeshroom. I would not take it out of the jar until it is 100% colonized. It will end in disaster is you birth before the mycelium is done eating all the exposed food.

I get pretty excited every time I look in my closet, cannot wait for these guys to be done! And I've sniffed the inoc holes on all 5 jars, no funky smells (or any smell really) from them, but I'll definitely take a good whiff when they're birthed. Also as far as the moisture goes, I've never done this before so I just went with the standard 2:1:1, however 4/5 of the jars with growth are cracked, so a couple of them really do have extra moisture. So far no signs of contaminants though.

I'm actually thinking about crushing these up and spawning them to coir/verm if I can figure out what my chances of success are, so far the only reason against it that I've heard is "cakes aren't the best to spawn" which doesn't seem very concrete to me, unless there is a reason I'm not finding. If I have the option to add 2-3 weeks onto my grow in order to have a much better yield, I think that's what I'd like to do. Here's the idea that I'm thinking of, and I've still got probably another 10 days before the first cake will be ready to birth, so I will definitely be reading up on spawning.

Oh also about Princeshroom's comment, we were talking about in the event of a stall, so that would seem to make sense to me.

Cheers!

Edit: I think I might have a contam, one jar is definitely not brilliantly white in the center, but very rhizo and super white where its grown out. There is like a quarter sized area that's tinged, you can see it in the above post. I just decided to look at it next to might healthiest jar, and it's a pretty significant difference. I don't have anywhere to isolate it unfortunately, so It's just on a different shelf in my closet..

For your first time I would just fruit them as cakes in a sgfc. That way your nearly guaranteed some shrooms plus you can get your first mushrooms grown and after that you will be much more patient with them. Also fruiting cakes in a sgfc teaches you a lot about the needs of these mushrooms. You could go ahead and noc you up some grain jars to do bulk with.  :2cents:

Part of my impatience and desire to spawn this to bulk is because right now I don't have any more spores, nor do I have the money for them or for a PC, so I wanted to get a large enough yield that I can enjoy it for a little while. However, I've read that popcorn can be steam sterilized, and if that is the case, then maybe I could attempt an LC or cardboard TEK for cloning from my BRF jars and do a transfer to the popcorn?

Also, being that I've only got 5 jars, about how much of a yield would be the average?

Also, how long does my account need to be active to access the market place? Don't remember where I read about it, but it's 30 days or something right?

Alright, got my very first contam! WOO! One of my 3 jars that didn't colonize has a nice orange blob growing on the bottom, and I'm not sure I've ever smelled something quite so rancid. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be looking for as far as smell goes, so I gave the holes in the lid a good strong wiff.. and then I gagged and wasn't so happy I'd taken such a big sniff. It's in one of the cracked jars, so I'm assuming its safe to just toss it in the trash bin outside without dumping it or anything?

Currently have 3 jars at 100% and 2 jars getting very close. 1 jar has a spot on the bottom I'm a little worried about, but there are no signs of smell, growth of the potential contam (hasn't grown at all still, just foggy greyness on the bottom where I first noticed it), and no signs of metabolites.

Don't really have any interesting pic's to put up today.

Also, what does primordia/hyphal knots look like? I have a couple spots in the 100% jars that look like little cotton balls on top the mycelium, am I right in identifying that as primordia, or is it more likely nothing?
