We talked more, read more newspapers, magazines, books, etc...There was also about 10 or so phone numbers I could remember right off the top of my head. I can remember only about 2-3 now. *SIGH*
Cell phones/hand held comps are changing the way humans interact with one another. There is no stopping it. We must all deal with it/roll with it as best we can. For those of you who have never known a life without comps and cell phones, I don't know what to say. You will never know the simplicity of the art of just talking to someone without any distractions (yes, even total strangers in shops, restaurants, waiting in lines, etc...). There is a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips (which is a good thing) but it can have a negative affect on us as well.
Thanks for this thread! It made really ponder the question. It took me back in time in my mind and made me feel nostalgic.
We used to hack free long distance calls on MCI. The 80s

you used to have to go home to recieve a phone call. like you'd see someone and they'd be like "oh i'll call you at 4pm" then you had to plan on going home at 4pm so you could recieve their phone call, so you plan to meet IRL.
also you called a household, not the individual person you were trying to talk to. so you'd call and ask if soandso was there and maybe hey were or maybe they weren't.
what a retarded system.

Word. Every really close friend and every adventure I've ever went on started this way. See someone, strike up a chat and chances are they're pretty damn cool.
>Imagine you're a shy introvert buying a coffee in the 80's. and then you sit down and wait for the coffee to be made. What do you do?
If I were a shy introvert OP I'd strive not to be. You're missing out on the adventures taking place all around you every time you bury your nose in your phone.

To OP:
find out, sell your phone/throw it out/leave it at home
no need for a cellphone, you can always borrow a phone to dial if it is urgent, but it rarely is

what a retarded system.
I remember it like everyone kindof woke up at the same time, and you had to call someone by 8am to arrange a meet up for lunch or afternoon. If they had a direct line at the office, you could call them from home a pay phone or your work/home. Any afterwork plans had to be settled by lunch, but you would still likely miss out on spontaneous get togethers.
Most of the time you didnt have phone access to your friends you could go meet other people with the same problems and be friends with them.
Try that shit now, and you will most likely be in an over 50 crowd of divorced men.
Young people are basically fucked and dont know how to talk to people, or why. Op, dont feel bad, its endemic. Having that question in your head probably means your confused and introverted state of being makes you 'normal' among peers.

I hate cell phones, I only use mine when I travel in the car . Yes I might be old school but it's just getting worse , people don't even talk to each other public transport any more . I'm in my mid 30's and work with a load of 20 somethings who are married to there phones , checking them all the time to see if some noob has updated there status or so shit .
In the canteen at work everyone is sat playing some fucked up facebook game , the art of conversation is dead . They will even text the noob sitting next to them , WTF he is right next to you .But then again technology works both ways , we not all be here bitching about phones if it weren't for technology .

I hate people who text with friends who aren't there, instead of talking with ones that are.

There is nothing worse than trying to have a conversation with someone and they are just glued to there phone and say " I'm listening "

He wanted to know how people kept themselves entertained and avoided in-person social interactions before cell phones. Shouldn't be too big of a mystery because even today many people don't rely on a phone to keep themselves entertained.

Writing letters was like texting, News papers were like the internet and pay phones were like cell phones.
We had to drink coffee at dunkin donuts because there was no starbucks.

People are 30% less physically attractive when their face is lit up by the light from a cell phone.

Then the dismay with your fellow humans would be all the greater.
