good source for gormet mushrooms
    #18858744 - 09/18/13 03:34 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

can anyone tell me a good source for gourmet mushroom spores, portabella, oyster and morel. I think it was RR who made a video of oyster mushrooms using straw and a laundry basket. where I live its nearly impossible to find any kind of gourmet mushroom in a store, and its also nearly impossible to find any work where I live, so I figure I could grow some mushrooms and make a few bucks legally.

I've been posting in the marketplace here at shroomery and then I just placed an order at thesporedepot.com for some more edibles.

Doesn't hurt to ask around,  usually getting some from a forum member is cheaper than a shop,  but sometimes you don't get as good of a product (I just paid for a chunk of agar covered in trichoderma mold from a member)

Portobello are available at every grocery store in my area,  as well as Shiitake,  oyster,  and buttons fresh. There are several in my area that have brown and white beech,  king oyster,  Maitake and black wood ear.  Right now I know of one grocery store that has matsutake and chanterelles.

Safeway in my neighborhood also carries the full assortment of fungus amongus dried mushrooms.

You can clone any of them,  but I want strains from other hobbyists.  (except my king oyster strain,  it's from Korea commercial)

Berkeley bowl for instance is a fancy hippy grocery store in my area that will carry some pretty quality shrooms when they are in season.

morels, chants (purple, black golden), lobster, hedgehogs, oysters of course, and a few other pretty choice varieties

im fairly certain portobellos are simply just mature button mushrooms (correct me if im wrong guys) and i dont find them to be very flavourful or good for cooking (imo)

They're the same species,  but different variety.  Portobello are grown up crimini.

I think they're delicious,  especially grilled.  I like button mushrooms as well.

and arent crimini and button one and the same?

its just a personal thing for me. they dont do it for tastewise like other wild or choice mushrooms do. yes they are edible but i wont find myself going out of my way to harvest a lot of them. but thats just like my opinion man

That could still be true based on how you define "species"

Are you a lumper or a splitter?

Not what I meant haha.

But that is cool. Me to mostly. Agnostic Humanist. I guess.

But what I mean is that they can inter breed as broccoli and cauliflower can.

So, are they the same species or no? I would say yes. The lines get blurry though.

the way he said it was basically a baby, teen, adult thing

buttons become crimini and later portabella. all three names for the same mushroom. i suppose that was the consensus at the time, but knowledge changes and new facts arise

pretty cool stuff.
