Syringe through pinholes or can I just squirt at the substrate?

Taking my second attempt at growing, first attempt was a crash and burn.
Will be innoculating quart size jars of GS, is using syringes with inoculation ports 100% necessary within a sterile, still air glovebox condition? Couldn't I just open the jar a tiny crack and squirt from above?

You can do that no problem. Not the traditional way but whatever. How do you think agar is transferred to grains?

Well, first I have to say I'm a newbie. Been reading here for awhile, followed PFTEK to the letter and my first grow failed.
Now trying Violet GS TEK, would like to start with quart sized plastic spawn jar. I guess I'm hoping to avoid the hassles of making an inoculation port, and not sure if the port materials would survive a PC? Also the filter, etc. etc, with GE possibly drying out my substrate, seems like it would invite more hassle than it's worth.

You absolutely can noc up your grains in a SAB without SHIPs (self healing injection ports). No question about it. You can do it with great success.
Some people like them, but they are far from being necessary. If you get a contamination, SHIPs certainly make it easier to blame the syringe.

Would this not eliminate nearly all GE?

As long as he has polyfil, Tyvek, EZ Felt, or SFD it won't.

I didn't realize that OP was planning on accounting for this

I was thinking I could use G2G, according to other posts, this leads to faster colonization, if I see it stall I could just crack open the lid slightly as per Violet's Tek.
My last grow had serious stalling problems using pre-stocked bulk subtrate and pre-sterlized half pint jars, humidity was hard to control, substrate was too dense, never reached consolidation. Just want to keep things as simple as possible.
I wasn't planning on using any of those other methods, just cracking the lid..

opening the lids to knock up a jar is used for agar and grain to grain transfers. If you are going to follow Violets tek the you have to follow Violets tek. As new growers we need to do what the tek says. If you dont follow the tek you're not doing the tek.

You will be much more prone to contamination that way. You will need to make a hole in the lid and stuff with polyfill or use something that Mush mentioned above.

Check out "About GE and CO2 stalls" in her tek. She seems to prefer leaving her lids unmodified, but suggests polyfil over self healing inoculation ports if we want to make holes.

Correct, and you are attempting to do her tek without using the self-healing injector port.

Regardless of wether you use a SHIP or not, you should have a filtered GE hole. Opening the jar for inoculation is one thing, opening the jar for GE is another.
Every time you open the jar, you open the possibility for contamination. Many experienced and trusted cultivators will agree that filtered GE holes are better than opening for GE. Why mess with it when you can just leave it alone.
Not to say opening does not work, just saying filtered GE hole is less risky and less hassle.
