Cow Pastures
    #1885957 - 09/05/03 04:19 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

If I shoot spores into some cow pies in the local cow pastures will they come up every year? Will they survive the winter? I live in the Upper Peninsula Of Michigan we have cold winters.

Thanks

Not likely. Very few patties in the wild that contain spores will grow shrooms. It could happen, but the odds are definately not in your favor.

The spores are generally supposed to be picked up by the cow before it shits. That is, they are supposed to pass through the digestive system. The real problem is that it takes too long to go from spores to fruitable mycelium if the process is started too late.

No, feed them the spores. That's an awful thing to do to an animal, inject with spores.

No, I don't think so. But as cows don't have strong acids in their digestive systems, it won't hurt either. But it's in no way a necessity. Cubies grow in the wild without the aid of cows. Hell, _we_ grow them without the aid of cows

Actually what happens as Mr. Sleep was saying is, When you find mushrooms growing out of a cow patty, this is how they got there. The Cow Eats mushrooms, the spores then germinate in the cows stomach into mycelium. The Cow then takes a shit and tada. You get the idea.....

that is only a theory. there are many others, like myc in the field moving into the poop when conditions are right, or spores in the field germinating underground near some poop. love to hear some more opinions or evidence, though.

Evidence, Well where I used to live my buddy bought a ranch and never had any mushrooms growing from the cow manure because the previous owner would feed the cows orange peels and so they wouldnt grow(proven fact). All you could find on his ranch were death caps growing on the ground in the grass. He wanted to start making a little extra money on the side so he drove up north a little bit to a farm about 50 miles away I told him about because it was the best field to go shrooming on. I mean literatly we would get 10 pounds of shrooms everytime we went out there. Well I told my buddy to feed all his cows straw with about a pound of mushrooms in it because I read that is how they grow from the shit a long time ago. He has only 5 cows by the way. The next week shrooms galore. I wish I took pics to document it but it does work. That is how they grow from cow shit, yes some times the spores will grow from the ground or even under the shit where spores were. Spores can get blown around very easily.
