Long-shot but maybe the wounded tree produced carboxylic acid-containing healing agents that stained the blue pigment. http://sciencelinks.jp/j-east/article/200407/000020040704A0194695.php

He is joking that you drew it with a red sharpie. The more I think about my theory the likelier it seems to me.

quote from your link:
Quote:

The blue color of XL became red by ultraviolet irradiation

I suppose that could happen, but the forest is shady equal  as all around and apart from green colored wood I have newer seen that red transformation.

Doh, it seems reasonable to be the case, gren became red by IR.

& I wouldn't spot the thing it it would not be turned upwards.

To be tested ... green wood & exposure to light ...

BTW: WTF sharpie, do you see my country there ? (-:
Now I know: sharpie = (sharpie.equals(pen)?sharpie: pie made form shark; (-:

:lmafo:
try using an IR source to artificially change the color, also consider using UV light also. but i guess natural light would be best.
Did the red in the wood go deep or was it just on the surface?

It was estimated that the phenolic hydroxyl groups of XL were acylated by ultraviolet irradiation, because the acetyl XL was red.

They could also be acylated by compounds in the wood. Maybe. idk nuffin.
