The hypocrisy of mainstream religion
    #18861651 - 09/19/13 05:19 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Religion for the masses pretty much equals brainwashing, but at the very least it would be nice if people actually stuck to their so-called beliefs.

I don't particularly like the title of this thread. I mean, that's a great story, which in my opinion highlights the good side of religion. That pastor was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing, teaching his congregation.

The reason I dont like the title is because of what it implies. Are you saying that non religious people dont behave in ways that are hypocritical or that non mainstream religious cult members are less hypocritical than mainstream religious people? And why is this one church automatically representative of all "mainstream religion"? How do you know the result would be the same at all churches? What makes you think the result has anything to do with how "mainstream" the church is?

To truly adhere to Christ's teaching requires one to be a saint. Most people aren't saints, especially not in the mainstream. Most people simply aren't ready/willing to put forth the type of commitment, effort and self denial that is required to truly progress along the path to sainthood. This has been a problem with Christianity from the get-go. In the Bible, God laments the fact that those who claim to be his followers have his name on their lips but their hearts are far from him. So expecting people to actually follow what their religion teaches in all aspects of their lives, is putting extremely unrealistic expectations on them. Not that I am defending sinful behavior, I am simply saying that these people are lucky to have a pastor who is willing to go to these lengths to teach them and hopefully they'll learn something from it. Because that is what religion is meant to be about, learning how to be a good person who treats others with the respect and dignity that you wish to be treated with. If we all did that already and weren't hypocrites by nature, there wouldn't be much of a need for religion, would there?

"I came into this world for the sinners, not for the righteous" - Jesus Christ

So funny. Perfect example of hypocrisy. This post reeks of superiority and smug self-righteousness.

You know it really is true that people often tend to criticize in others the same negative traits that they themselves possess.

This is why Jesus told us to remove the beam in our own eye, before trying to remove the splinter in our bother's eye.

Well Deviate, I think you hit the nail right on the head there. You are right, should I even be making a thread like this?

That has always been my favourite verse of the Bible.  Being judgemental is a funny thing really, almost a paradox.  The church-goers were being judgemental of the "homeless man", and now me and few others are being judgemental of the church-goers.  And now you are judging us  It could go on and on.  What is the solution here?

I agree, absolutely brilliant teaching from the pastor.  Most of the congregation will never look at a homeless man in the same way again and will definitely change their behaviour.  But unfortunately stories like this are few and far between, but I have massive respect for people like this.

Unfortunately in my experience, Christians (not all Christians, but a lot) and other Abrahamic religions such as Islam, seem to be the most judgemental of "non-believers", and yet as you say that is the complete opposite of the teachings of Christ.  The Roman Catholic church IS the devil in my opinion.  They are the Antichrist.

That story is an example of goopy, vapid, moralistic, and thoughtless lying in the name of religion. Written by the same fucking dopes that brought you Hallmark clichés and those macramé wall hangings that say shit like - I once asked God why I was always so alone and he said you see those fucking footsteps I was carrying your sick and self righteous sloppy fucking bogus ass while you were lying and writing moralistic pigheaded crap during my fucking sermon.

I went to catholic high school
I remember bringing the satanic bible once
and this guy who used to follow me around
started getting really into the book
so I grabbed it out of his hand and flushed it
down the toilet. fact is though the bible
has done more harm than the satanic bible

Significant generalization. The satanic bible is a great work and I thoroughly enjoyed the sarcasm of that literature

The Bible has been read about a zillion times more frequently so saying it has done more harm is pretty stupidly obvious, its also done more good.

But is it a Bible that does harm or is it people that do it? last I checked my Bible just sat on its shelf. it never attempted to harm me or anyone else to my knowledge. Its just a book of ancient myths and wisdom and a pretty good one imo.

What are some books of wisdom that you think are better than the Bible and how does the message they convey differ from the wisdom taught in the Bible?

Oh and the satanic Bible is pretty good. Satanism in general is a pretty solid philosophy. But it's not revolutionary. Satanism is just living as a natural man. We dont really need a Bible to tell us to do what comes naturally to us. Satanism can help us better understand ourselves and better order our behavior to our own benefit but it lacks the transendentalism of the Bible. The fact that the Bible often teaches us to do the opposite of what comes naturally (the way that seems right to a man is the way that leads to death says our Lord Jesus Christ) is what makes the Bible interesting and different from self help books which guide one in the art of perfecting the ego.

My point is, I don't try to blow holes in peoples' beliefs until they try to shove their beliefs down my throat. We have this thing called class, but some equate it with money, and they all go to church on sunday to prove their superiority.
I guess you may not live in the bible belt, where there is no seperation of church and state.
