Which Are the Best Disinfectants?

Since sanitation is so important, I thought a thread about sterilizers/disinfectants might be helpful to more than a few people. There doesn't seem to be any FAQ about what kind of disinfectant kills what. I've read bits and pieces about different products, some apparently kill only bacteria -- not mold or fungi. I've also read about some spray claimed to "grab stuff out of the air". And, of course, I've read a few conflicting claims. I'd just like to know what's best to disinfect work areas like counter tops, etc. as well as any info or tips on sterilizing implements besides the obvious flame/iso/pressure cooker routine.
It would also be great to know what is supposed to kill mold, what's supposed to kill fungi, and what to use for whatever bacteria I need to kill. Is there a single product I that works? Or should I spray on some of this and wipe with some of that?
Is there really this magical air spray? I've read about sticky sheets to catch particulates -- they sound useless to me, but do they help? I bought some commercial grade sanitizer tablets used for food prep. The label says it meets some federal requirement (can't find the bottle now to look it up) and that it kills AIDS. It sounds good, would it be worth trying?
Are there some tried and true products and methods everybody else knows about except me?

I would say bleach and 70% isopropyl alcohol.

AIDS is so rampant in mycology, I'm glad someone sees the real problem. Now that I got that out the way, most growers aren't going to have access to some of this stuff. Thats why lysol, bleach, soapy water and 70% alcohol are the most recommended as they are the easiest to obtain.
I use cavacide and matacide for my work area and to clean my gloves/sleeves. Shit is super harsh on the skin but kills everything.

Thanks for mentioning those products. The CavaCide seems especially good as it kills viruses, bacteria and Fungi. And as for your snide comment about AIDS -- the major selling points for both CavaCide and Quote:

I wasn't concerned about killing AIDS for my mycology -- I was mentioning that the ability to kill it is touted by most commercial disinfectants. I don't know what set you off about it.

All you literally need is some Lysol (generic or not) for the air, and I use both 70% iso and a 10% bleach/water mixture interchangeably. Theres no method to the madness but I usually spray down my glove box with the bleach/water mixture really well then line the floor with some paper towel which i soak, then for what ever reason i wipe off all my jars and what not with the iso... Using those 3 things with my glove box I've not had a single contam during the colonization period at all this year. Best of luck.

This is a great topic! I found two boxes of germicidal wipes in my home but I am hesitant to use them as I have never heard of anyone on here mention them. They are PDI Sani-Cloth germicidal wipes. The box says not for use on skin and they are used in hospital environments. It claims to kill Aspergillus Niger, Aspergillus candidus, Candida albicans, E. Coli, Salmonella, Influenza, Herpes, Staph, HIV/AIDS, Vancomycin resistant bacteria, MRSA, Avian flu, H1N1, Human Coronavirus... this stuff is hardcore! I'm just concerned it might be a bit too harsh to use on the inside of my SAB and utensils. I think doing my countertop with these might be OK, but still kinda weary. Says it requires 3 minutes of wet contact time to be effective. For use in ER, ICU, NICU, Operating rooms and surgery departments. What got my attention was its ability to kill Aspergillus which I have read is a contam associated with this hobby. Anyone ever heard of this product before or have firsthand knowledge of it?

You don't really need fancy disinfectants for this work. Your technique will save you and all you have to do is use warm soapy water and occasionally if you want to do or do g2g transfers use an alcohol wipe on the lids and bands and that's the only time I ever use a sanitizer.

These wipes contain 70% Iso as well as these other agents that kill Aspergillus etc. Would these be OK to use to wipe the tops of my jars with?

There should be instructions on how probably use the wipes. With cavacide and matacide you have to wait ten minutes to ensure that it does it's job.

Interesting threads.
if you want to clean (perfect) a place or an objcets or a surface you need to choose the right "cleaner". You can make a decontamination, a disinfection or sterilization. I suggest to read a "disifection protocol" like this http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/bmbl5/bmbl5_appendixb.pdf
I think that you could purchease some products for dentist or some medical equipement

These are good reads, I have a certification from my states health department in being certified in blood borne and shut borne pathogens.

Ok people. I cut and pasted from own archive...
Having clean and sanitary conditions surrounding your operation can not be stressed enough. There is no such thing as “too clean” in this hobby. The ideal habitat that the cultivator creates for fungi, is also ideal for contaminants. Bleach kills complex organisms and colonies, hydrogen peroxide kills spores, isopropyl alcohol kills simple and single organisms. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QUAT CLEANERS) are excellent surface cleaners, (Mr. Clean, 409 multisurface antibacterial, Spic and Span Disinfectant in spray bottle) look for active ingredients on labels containing the word ammonium chloride. i.e.
n-n dimethly ammonium chloride
or
benzyl ammonium chloride.
QUAT CLEANERS ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE GENERAL CLEANER YOU CAN USE IN YOUR HOME OR WORK SPACE. DWELL TIME IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN USING QUATS, or BLEACH SOLUTIONS. I let dwell 5 min for quats, and 10 min for bleach. I use it for cleaning all counter tops, walls, everything...you can even use it your carpet cleaning solution if you plan on cleaning your carpets anytime soon.
I get a concentrated quat cleaner in the humidifier department, sold for disinfecting humidifiers. My local chemical supplier also sells concentrated quats by the gallon for about $16 bucks. The concentrate is awesome because it actually makes about 55 gallons of solution, and I just mix up what I need, when I need it.
Clorox brand aerosol usually contains quats, and most generic brand disinfectant aerosols will contain quats.
Lysol brand aerosol will vary by region for some reason, and often times contains saccharides and pentols/alcohol, rather than quats, or with the quats. It is not as good of a disinfectant as the other aerosols listed. Lysol aerosol use is also more commonly affiliated with growth mutations and rosecomb than the other listed. (not that you want to use aerosols around your projects much at all anyway..but it happens).

Hey an interesting fact on Aids and HIV disinfection...
HIV has become resistant to household grade bleach concentrations (usually 4-6%)
If you dilute household bleach with water to 1:5, 1:10, or even 1:20, it will effectively kill HIV if allowed the proper dwell time (I cant recall what that is)
Bleach mixed with water only retains its disinfectant properties for 24 hours, after which is no longer effective, and a new solution should be made.
I hate it when my bulk gets the AIDS too.

Lol Im not gay, not that there is anything wrong with that but I am far from gay.
Edit: Also I am not sure what verification of ones sexual identity has to due with mushroom cultivation, let alone to your thread. Especially, when giving out pseudo-attacks to someone who provided concrete information for your thread along with answering questions is poor form.

Tea tree oil and Grapefruit seed extract, If you don't already have these they'll cost you around $20-30 at your local health food store. "They kill mold/fungi" - local mold inspector. I haven't found anyone here using these...but i intend to use a mix in my SAB w/ some oils in the bottom w/ the soapy water. Bleach is good for kitchens and bathrooms w/ hard surfaces...if you are trying to kill any mold or fungi on wood...those won't work. Put tea tree & Grapefruit seed extracts in your mop bucket, use it anywhere you are cleaning.
edit: Bleach does not penetrate anything to kill mycellium, you'd be better spraying tea tree oil on your carpet, cleaning walls...Bleach will clean the "Surface"
