Looks like metabolites, which mycelium produces when there is bacteria present

That is metabolites, and usually points toward a bacterial contamination.

Do you remember how much water you put in? Too much water is a good chance of contam. But all of the Mycelium is on the bottom which leaves me to believe the water settled at the bottom.

Don't do that. Is that a dry verm barrier at the top of the jar?

I just flipped the jars upside down.
I used 2 cups of brown rice flour, 2 cups of water, and 4 cups of vermiculite for my jars.
Any ideas about how to save these guys or is it too late? All 12 jars are showing signs and there is a lot of condensation. Could I open the jars and try to fruit them? They all look about 90% colonized and I see pins on some of them.

They look colonized to me. If there are pins definitely fruit them asap. Bacteria might win the battle or it might not, but either way fruit them and find out(the ones that are 100% colonized)

Dunking them should probably rinse off any metabolites on the outside without you having to rub them

Hydrogen peroxide can be useful on live mycelium. I have used a spray bottle to mist a contaminated petri dish, and the myc eventually grew right over the possibly dead contams with vigor. I would try a light mist directly to the cake. Dunk in cold water to slow bacterial growth.

Peroxide damages Myc, and can slow/stall Myc growth. The only thing it's good for is killing Cobweb when it comes to dealing with Contams.

There is no doubt that myc will be damaged as well, but it is much more resistant to it than bacteria is. The H2O2 will burn the myc, but it is resilient enough to spring back quickly.
This same concept applies to the human use of hydrogen peroxide.

Don't flip the jars!
And if your worried about contam just fruit that cake in the jar bro. That way it's out of your SGFC, and won't spread to anything else. You'll still get some mushrooms but wo risk to the rest of your grow. Fruit it invitro in a separate room.

I birthed, dunked, and rolled my cakes on 9/20 and placed them in my SGFC on a bed of wet perlite. It's been 3 days and the only difference I have seen in the cakes is they are getting whiter...not sure if this is mycelium or cobweb mold or some sort of bacteria... I am getting a little worried about these guys. Thinking about dumping them and starting fresh--what do you all think? There IS a little mushroom head pinning on one of the cakes, very small (last pic) but that's it

They're looking good to me. Definitely don't throw those out.
Also, you mentioned a single pinning mushroom, but what are those three in the second-to-last pic? Dont see heads on them, though.

I'm not so sure, they don't have heads so I didn't want to call them shrooms..yet! I'm only concerned because I rolled them completely in verm after dunking and in 3 days you can see theyre about 30% white on the outside, something is growing over the verm, it looks like..

I agree...give them some time. Hard to tell what that three-clump mass is in the third picture, but the last picture shows what appears to be a healthy pin

I didn't want to call them shrooms without heads on them, but today they started growing them!
Does anyone know if it is safe to add perlite to my FC? I just got a hygromter and my humidity is a little on the lower side. I only have about 3 inches of perlite right now...should've done my reading.

How are the cakes doing, lowery?
As far as adding perlite goes...I've never done it with cakes birthing in the FC, but don't see any problem with adding some as long as you are careful. Is your humidity gained from misting?

You nailed it on the head brotha! I didn't end up adding any more perlite. Apparently all it took was patience (I know I know, rookies mistake). I did some research on the strain (Thai Pink Buffalo) and they typically take a little longer to pin than others. But here's an update for anyone interested:
Taken on 9/26 AM:

Taken on 9/27 PM:

Some pinning:

I'm a little worried about this one (note the splitting stem turning green):

Not actually sure that it is being that the beginnings of the thread are different. I was pretty tired when I was on last night and didn't really look thoroughly, so if it is against the rules, maybe someone else will tell you.

If that print offer is open ended, I'd like to try out agar and cloning at some point, and will only have burma spores to do it with; might be more fun to try a few different strains.

I just read up on printing and making syringes; thinking about trying it as well with these Thai Pink Buffalos.

I grew Burma my first grow and it didn't go so well, is it typically a harder one to grow? Just out of curiosity. I only got 10 grams dry on 12 cakes Quote:

I honestly don't know, I'm doing my first grow right now. The mycelium is a beautiful brilliant white and really colonizing well right now though, so I really hope they fruit well. 10g from 12 cakes is a little worrying though, I have 8 cakes, but only 5 of them have growth right now....
You've got me scared now!
Off topic, how do I inocculate with cloned material? My plan was to use the cardboard tek to clone from flesh, and I'm also searching for a tek on isolates, but that might be something for far off in the future. Anyway, do I just break the mycelium up and put it in a syringe, or is there a more complicated/simple process for this? (question for any knowing eyes)

No experience with Burma on this end, so I'm not too sure. Can't help much on the clone material either...I've only gone as far as G2G and LC's. Just finished my flow hood and have my petri dishes coming in the mail for starting some agar work. I'll look it up some and if I read anything interesting I will send you a link.
KatuXIK...not a problem to send some prints your way when they are ready. I'll have Golden Teacher, Z-strain, Camb, Braz, and some B+
Loving the picture...Isn't it great? Waiting waiting waiting and then they show up and grow so quickly. Love it.

What do you mean upward? They continue growing away from the stem until the gills are fully extended, which is usually when the cap is slightly upturned. Unfortunately shrooms only look sexy if you pick them while they're sexy. :P
Also that set of gills extended off the top of the cap looks like either a mutation or (possibly?) an injury. Wont hurt you to eat mutants though, or you can even clone the little guys and spawn yourself a whole freak show!

Yeah dude I wouldn't be worried about mutants too much, as far as I read they wont hurt you, unless the mutation is caused by some crazy contamination, then it could not be so great. A more experienced person should confirm/deny this.
And the wavy, inverted cap is just something that happens as they grow older, nothing to be worried about.

The caps growing upward is completely normal when you let it mature a little more. Some wouldn't let it go that far, some pick them when the veil just breaks, or when they look like a Popsicle right before the veil tears.
At one point i came back to my monotub after letting a sitter watch it. Well it looked like the sitter was out of town too because all my mushies were so huge and all the caps have lifted themselves in an upward motion while spraying spores everywhere. By the looks of your picture, you did let them grow past the point of sporing on a small vicinity it looks. So it's expected for those to mature even more.

Damn, I just dried them and ended up with a little over 2 oz dry on my first flush. I've never done multiple flushes before. I dunked my cakes, re-rolled in verm, washed my FC and placed the cakes in there again. Is this all I have to do??

2oz on your first flush??? How many cakes? Now you've got me excited and worried :p
Edit: And now I'm very worried... just got home and I think 4 jars are contam'd.... meaning I'm left with 1 if I'm right... Man, and they're all at 75% or above!
What do I do? Isolate my 1 jar and hope for the best from the other 4?

I got over 2 oz dry on 10 cakes overall. I'm down to 9 now though.
Do you have a camera? Post some pics of the jars you think are contaminated on here, the community here helps a LOT.
I would isolate the one that looks best.

Alright so if you got 2oz on 10, I should be hoping for 1oz on 5.. at least maybe in theory. :P Maybe I'll luck out and they'll be super shrooms!
Well the jars I'm concerned about are really hard to tell because A) the potential contam is on the bottom ring, where the glass is thick, bent, and super distorted, making it extremely difficult to judge and impossible to take a picture. It's a slight redish color, the same color of burnt flower and literally EVERY cracked jar I have has it to some extent, but they've all had it since sterilization because they are in fact slightly burnt. B) All of the jars that I thought were contam'd last night, seem to be looking pretty healthy and have grown over the unhealthy looking spots with no difficulty and no discoloration. Just as well, mycelium is growing out from behind the substrate and towards the glass in uncolonized areas, and it's very rhizomorphic and thick leading me to believe that the center of the cake is healthy, as if it were over run by contams I don't think the mycelium would be able to make it from one side, through the center of the cake, and out the other side.
Also as a further suggestion that they are not in fact contaminated (and I've been thinking it's bacterial) I had one jar that did actually contaminate (never colonized after 3 weeks), and the smell.. oh my god the smell.... The only smell that I (might) be able to smell from the rest of my jars, is an earthy smell that I don't recognize, but it's pleasant and almost welcoming, which leads me to believe that my cakes are not in fact housing unwanted guests.
This hobby is harder than I thought, cause if I screw up and these jars are contam'd, I'm either out several weeks of effort, or I get some poisonous shrooms.
Edit: This is also the first time in 2 or 3 months that I've been sober for longer than 12 hours, so I'm feeling a little funny and everything isn't quite right for me at the moment. As I get used to being sober over the next few days I'm sure my judgement on this will get a little better.

Katu: any updates? If theyre almost colonized I would birth them and see what happens. I was was worried about contams too...but I birthed early and luckily the mycleium won. Let me know updates though!!!
I got a questiom for anyone still following this thread: I dunked and (mistakingly) rolled for my second flush...its been 8 days since I I placed in fruitong chamber and nothings happening. Ive read sometimes 2nd flushes can take up to 14 days...anyone with experience on this??

4 jars at 100% and 1 lagging behind at 95%. Right now everything is looking very healthy, not seeing any discolorations or anything that looks worrying. I think they were just fucking with me, being like "Oh hay look, our grower dude is sooooo blazed, lets fuck wit him". I mean, if mushrooms could do that anyway....

I've got burmas going right now, though I really hope to get 2 or 3 others started next month. And I wish I could show you pics, but I broke my phone on my way to by a new piece (which, is a fucking epic piece). As soon as I get a camera, you'll have some pics!
I can't fruit yet cause I thought I still had 3 or 4 more days of waiting, but I did the math in my head with a week = 10 days... I smoke way to much for my own good. :P But tomorrow after work I'm gonna get a massive tub and set up an SGFC; I hope target is open late though, cause I've got a double shift.
Also, 4 jars!!!!!

Haha...I think we all smoke too much reefer for our own good. Glad the new piece was worth it. So youre waiting a week for mycelium to completely consolidate? Make sure to get enough perlite for the bottom of thr tub...about two bags of it gives a good 4 to 5 inch layer. I read on here people using a piece of chicken wire on top of the perlite to place the cakes on vs pieces of tinfoil...I havent tried it yet but im definitely doing it next time!!

Dood I want to get you some pics sooo bad, but I don't have a camera to use. Even my laptops camera doesn't tell me where the pictures are located, so I can't find them.. Anywho the good news is that all 5 jars have a fruiting body(s) and are looking pretty healthy! Researching the dunk-and-roll right now cause I don't have my chamber ready yet, but I can for sure make it tomorrow morning/night, depending on work and such. Ah I'm like a school girl every time I look at them, this is such an exciting and drawn out process!

Did you dunk after your first flush? Apparently that can improve your yield a lot.
My chamber wont be ready until monday actually, I got everything I need to make it except for the drill bit, turns out the hardware store closes early on saturdays.
And I think I found mold on one of my cakes, should I just fruit invitro until I have enough money to make a chamber for it?

Keep the one with mold away from the others, if it's 100% colonized the mycelium might win. It happened to me on all my jars and it turned out fine. I would birth asap though.
Yes I dunked after my first flush, for 12 hours. I made the mistake of re-rerolling in vermiculite--which youre not supposed to do apparently..., so after you dunk DO NOT roll in vermiculite.
Good news is my second flush went fine, just took 10 days to start pinning again

Its funny how this thread started out as a possible infected cake to full on healthy mushroom porn. I love this place!
Good job on your grow man, I get those yellowy liquid sometimes too. It just means its time to fruit, and maybe the incubation was a little too warm maybe?
Need some verification on that.

Edit: I posted in response to someone with 2,000 post, trying to tell them something about metabolites. I'm dumb. lol
And I'm actually about to birth them right now Lowery. My boss called me off for the morning half of my double, so I've got some time I wasn't expecting to have.
On another note, after my boss called I fell back to sleep and dreamed that I went in to work a few hours before I was supposed to (4pm) and got fired for it. That was strange, especially considering I rarely remember dreams; In fact, I probably haven't remembered a dream in 4 - 5 months.
Annnyywwwhhhooo..... Wish me luck! If I can figure out how to transfer photos off my "new" phone then I can even get you some pictures today!
Edit: Also, I don't think re-rolling really "hurts" you, I just don't think it helps. I might be wrong and contam rates may increase, but as far as I'm aware there just isn't much of a benefit.

For the record, your rant about the metabolites made complete sense to me. I think it's all relative in a way...shit happens! There's some super crazy stories on here, anything can happen it looks like and hell, mushrooms are just fungus and fungus WANTS to grow. I just hate it when I see it in my sour cream. Glad your grow's going well, keep trying, practice makes perfect.
Update on mine: 3rd time around--I dunked for 22 hours this time in room temp fresh spring water, and put them back in the fruiting chamber. This was last night so I expect maybe another week before I'll see signs of pins again. We will see. I am too stoked on my first two flushes that I dgaf at this point lol; they were potent as all hell and got just under 3 oz dry from the 12 cakes total--second flush didn't yield nearly half as much as the first.

3oz? That's amazing! When I started this grow I had no clue what to expect, right now based on what you're saying and the way my cakes are acting, hopefully around 1.5-2oz. There are so many of these little guys, and a few of them really aren't little, seriously thick stems and the heads are looking to be huge; That is of course that I'm correctly judging them by the pic's I've seen here on the shroomery.
Right now I've got 4 cakes in the big SGFC, I've got 1 cake dunking, and a miniature SGFC ready to go for him. I'm scared a spot on there might be mold, it's got a bunch of little black specks; The thing is though, I looked at one of my cakes the other day and it had black specks all over, and right away I freaked out and picked it up to see what was wrong. As it turned out, the black specs were just pieces of verm that had broken up a little bit and wasn't very shiny. I'm wondering if that might be what I was seeing in the jar, because when I birthed it I was having a hard time seeing the spot I was worried about, the black specks were mostly gone.
Anyway, yeah things are going great and I'll let you know when I get my first taste!

Ohhh yearh. Dude I am so new to Shroomery, is it cool that we keep talking to eachother on this thread or would this need to move to PMing? Thoughts?
Yeah I think I got lucky this time. My first grow was in Eugene, OR and it didn't do so hot, I made beginners mistakes across the board but only yielded less than an oz dry. Got all kinds of contams too. Sucked, so the second grow (the one I'm in now) is a million times better.
Fro your pics, they're def looking good. Just try to not open the chamber too often or go into the room too often. ITS SO HARD---THEYRE SOOOO CUTE and you just wanna sit there and stare for hours but dont do it. It's just not worth the contam.
Yeah, youre fruiting, you're in the clear now. Those gooms will take off in no time, 3-4 days and you're gonna be drooling. Eat em fresh if you can! How are you planning on drying??

You're asking me what I think? I'm 6 months newer than you are, I've only been a member for 30 days! Speaking of which.... MARKET PLACE! Anywho, I think we're alright being that we're still mostly on topic, everything we're talking about is relevant imo.
I think I'm getting very lucky, the only jar that I had for sure contam was a badly cracked and burnt jar, and the 2 jars I have that have 0 growth, still have no signs of contamination; I cannot find the slightest hint of anything that could even possibly be a contam. My sterile procedure wasn't even very good, and later on we found out we have mice, rotting floors, and rotting ceilings! Also on that note, my agar trays have 0 contams thus far and are growing fresh myc on all 4 of my clone trays (though no luck with MS yet).
It's a little hard to avoid going into the room and looking at them, they're actually in my bedroom, because the common area here is the only other option, and once in a while the landlord pops in; I'm not terribly certain he'd approve. As far as not touching them goes, I'm guilty of picking them up a few times, though I am officially done with that (as much as I want to view them so badly). Mycelium is apparently pretty resistant once its fully colonized, but we all know the old phrase "better safe than sorry" holds plenty of merit.
I'm pretty excited though, I got a couple of mutants (I think)! A couple of shrooms look like they have the stem partially extending from the head, pretty common, but still awesome! They're pretty small at this point so I may be wrong, but we'll see. I've also got one that has a very pale yellow cap, rather than the deep red cap; I'm a little concerned about that, and wondering if I should pluck it off to A) potentially save the huge shroom it's next to, and B) toss it on agar to see if it contams like crazy or produces clean mycelium. Depending on the outcome it could reveal something to watch for in the future, or I could find out I may have picked an abort or mutant.

Lowery I just got back from my first (good) trip. Harvested my mushrooms after work and dosed with an old friend, we walked around down town and just talked for hours. We also checked out a very cool pipe shop that is a couple blocks away. All in all it turned out to be a wonderful experience! Really hoping my cakes put out more though, I only harvested the mushrooms with broken veils, and wound up with around 45g wet. However, I tripped, my friend was slightly past threshold, and my neighbor is currently having a pretty good trip, and I have more than half of my harvest left, so I think these are probably pretty potent.
Anyway just thought I'd tell you I had a fun time before I crash out; Speak at you later!

If you're able to enter a shop and browse their items I wouldn't say you were tripping. But each to their own.. I usually have enough problems comprehending words like "me" "you" etc. Shopping never even crossed my mind

Tripping is being under the effects of a psychedelic drug, it doesn't specifically apply to level 4 and 5 trips, those are just trips that involve ego confusion/separation and/or ego death. My trip was level 2, I had colors, tracers, strange thought patterns, but I was still very much me and able to communicate when needed, which for me was a great trip! Honestly, I would've liked to see more intense patterns, but I don't think I would've like the difficulty thinking that would come with it.

More than one level of trip dude! My first trip was a level 5 trip with 25c and it put me in the hospital, the paramedics said they thought I was going to die. My second trip was a level 2 mushroom trip and it was delightful. :P I think the only reason for the levels is because of the mental changes that happen with each stage.

25i and 25c are amazing chemicals IMO--and actually prefer them other LSD just because the visuals are so much more intense. 2 tabs always does the trick and puts me right at a comfortable level 4.5...
On my third flush, but damn lost a LOT of potency on that second flush!!! I ate 7 grams dry over the course of 3 hours and it felt like nothing. Ended up just K'ing out the entire night instead to trip--it was a nice mixture of psychedelics and disassociates so worked well. Even had the courage to end the night with a mild DMT trip. Hopefully the third ones turn out better but damn--second was buuuunk.

My first flush finished on 3 cakes with a whopping 4.5g, and the other two cakes have a total of 2 pins after 4 days in the fruiting chamber; I'm pretty bummed out right now, don't have enough to trip a 3rd time. I tried to trip on monday with a gram, but not much happened, I should've waited more than a day to trip again.
I also learned that I accidentally aborted about half of my pins by over spraying/under misting, and I think I made the caps open early by the same mistake. A couple of the mushrooms were looking to be massive, and then in under 24 hours veils showed up and broke.
