If you don't want to read what I wrote, just skip it and watch the two videos.
George Lucas made significant digital edits to the first three Star Wars movies released in the seventies and eighties. In fact, this is now the only form in which these movies exist, because the unedited versions completely stopped being made, with the exception of limited edition DVDs. Very limited at that: only over the course of a few months in 2006. Other than that, all DVDs and the new Blu Rays (and TV airings, I believe) are the edited versions. By the way, those special DVDs are known as "the GOUT" among fans..."George's original unaltered trilogy." And they suffer from quality issues and a few time-of-day edits remain (i.e. an evening sky was changed to a dusk sky), I believe.
Some of these edits are understandable, for example, at least some explosions were changed from small explosives on a "miniature," to a refined, nuclearesque eplosion with the circle of fire outlining an inner explosion... But part of the coolness of Star Wars is that they were able to transform all that delicate work with miniatures and stuff into a theatrical movie. And if you replace that with CGI, you lose that.
Anyway, I've decided to post the biggest edit below. First is the original. Second is the edited version. Once again, outside of piracy and maybe foreign countries, the original Star Wars is unavailable (that's not to say that anyone with basic computer skills can't easily download the originals). By the way there is a project going on to make a pure version of the series using HD quality footage as a base and intricately replacing the edited scenes with the originals using various sources and techniques, and it's been completed, but it has been and will continue to be updated with improvements: Harmy's Star Wars: Despecialized Edition v2.5 - Video Sources Documentary
By the way, I'm not a Star Wars fan. But I spent time researching this last night because I was kind of fascinated by it. George Lucas even got the original actress in the below scene to do more scenes for it.
Note: The woman in this scene, who is a slave, is trying to strangle Jabba with a chain, although that isn't really apparent in either version.

Jabba seems likes a bloated overfed pot smoking creature with power and funds. I saw a bit of the additional features where the "slave" showed how hard it was not to laugh because it was the 80's and the way they did special effects. When the Death Star explodes she is looking at a white board that suddenly goes blank and she said she tried not to laugh though it's such a huge part of the movie emotionally.
And she has taken lsd, not during filming but she has a depth of that kind of understanding, the ubsurb but life as an actress or actor and the work that goes into it I don't know. Just a glimpse though I don't like all the behind the seans stuff because I love movies and and like to believe the false reality (and sometimes true reality) of the the written and improvised moments which good actors can do with the material.
I hate to much CGI though I can see how it can lower a movies budget. World War Z really pissed me off.
