Questions about growing on logs

I recently had an enormous oak tree cut down in my front yard andd was wanting to use it as a grow medium if thats possible. I have a Portabella culture and am getting some shitakes. I have not really been able to find much info on exactly how to go about this, so if anyone could point me in the right direction or tell me how to get started.

You really want a oak that's about 6 inches in diameter and freshly cut to make a mushroom log. Using plug spawn works best. Plug spawn is wooden dowels colonized with the mycelium. You drill a bunch of holes in the log and insert the plugs. Then you seal the holes with melted beeswax. There is a place in Asheville NC called Asheville fungi that sells plug spawn. They have a Web site you can order off of and can help you With the project. Just Google them. Good luck

Thanks man will definitely have to check them out. And freshly cut would mean like greenwood cut today, or any wood cut down recently. The tree has been down about 3 weeks, so its not exactly new. Also it was not the healthiest tree by any means so was a little rotten to begin with and has some form of fungus already growing out of it, I am guessing this will affect the ability to grow a new strain on the log?

Your assumptions would be correct. It needs to be a fresh healthy log with no competing fungus

also shiitake are the ones that will grow on logs portabella is a secondary decomposer so it would only really flourish on things like compost also portabella needs a peat moss casing layer.

Awesome thanks folks. Yeah after more investigating I found just what you guys are talking bout, videos and ports go on compost. Do you think I could just use like black gold compposted manure or are worm castings mixed with verm and something else (i forgot) be a better route for ports. I want to do an outdoor bed for ports, think it would work? I have seen people rig up little staked taps for a sort of GH.
