Furthur on hiatus (for good??)

Such a fucking bummer
Quote:
After more than four years of heavy, year-round touring, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have decided to put their band Furthur on hiatus in 2014. After the four night Furthur run in Mexico in January, the band will take the rest of 2014 off so that Phil and Bob can focus on their countless solo projects.
Furthur came together in September, 2009, and from its inception was a band Phil and Bob were completely committed to, and still are. In the 18 years since the Grateful Dead stopped being a touring entity, Furthur has proven to be the longest-tenured, and most active band featuring two or more former members of the Grateful Dead. With shows that keep the Dead vibe alive while pushing the musical envelope, well, furthur, this band has brought smiles to hundreds of thousands of fans in the past four years. Most impressive is that this has become a true band, and not just Phil and Bob plus some side players. John Kadlecik (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), Joe Russo (drums), and Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson (vocals) have joined the trip to create a band that has become one of the most exciting, honest and inspired touring acts in music today.
What does 2014 hold for Phil and Bob? If their activities outside of Furthur in the past four years are any indication, plenty. Phil’s been playing virtually every night when not on tour with Furthur, whether at his Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, or on the road with Phil Lesh & Friends. Bob’s been hosting one of the most unique web-based variety shows in history, Weir Here, every Wednesday night when he’s not touring, presented live from his TRI Studios in San Rafael. Additionally, Bob’s been having a blast playing his solo acoustic shows, as well as other gigs and tours with newer arrivals to the party. He plans to keep doing what he’s doing, and more of it.
The last time the word “hiatus” was used in regards to the Grateful Dead world was in 1974, and we all know how much good that break inspired. They returned a year and a half later, stronger than ever, and for another 20 years. Furthur’s not breaking up; they’re simply taking a much-needed break. One way or another, we’ll see you around.

Maybe 2015 will bring a Dead reunion tour. One thing's for sure, all the scummy wooks on Furthur tour are going to feel lost and need a new place to sell their filth and bring their violent and degenerate behavior to (I'm talking about present day "GDF" wanksters and the company they keep). Hopefully they go to the juggalo scene and stay out of the jam circuit.

I feel like it's a bit too far down the line to call a reunion. That's why I'm worried

Hope this isn't the end, but I'm glad I have the chance to see them in just a couple days at red Rocks before it's too late Looking forward to seeing what comes of their future solo projects.

Good, I'd much rather see Phil and Friends than Furthur. Bob Weir is so past his prime at this point I could give 2 shits less if I ever see him play again, and I've purposely avoided seeing him many times over the past several years. He was great at one time, but that time is long gone.

Wouldn't count on it for too much longer. Phil's getting old... This was an overdose of reality

They both are, but I bet Phil outlives Bobby and I don't think either one of them will stop playing. I do think they will stop touring soon though, but I think they got more than a year left in each of them.

Been looking forward to it for a while now. Last two times they came to Red Rocks, all 3 shows sold out too quick for me to get tickets... This time, I ordered them at least a month ago

Even when they are on, they aren't worth $70, DSO sounds a fuck ton better and plays with a lot more enthusiasm. If it wasn't Phil and Bobby they wouldn't be a first tier GD cover band.

Phil's on a borrowed liver. I think he'll play until he's gone, but I don't know how long he'll be here. Bob's mind will fade, but I think he has many years to live (most likely few years to play..)

Me too. Although I did just see them, and on friday I get to see Mickey so I can't complain.
But I've never been to RedRocks and this seems like it would be a perfect time to pop that cherry. Oh well.. It just isn't in the cards.

I couldn't agree more. I've seen Furthur a few times and streamed a handful and I lost interest pretty quick. Every DSO show I've been to has been enthusiastic, full of energy, and played well. DSO > Furthur.
I feel the same about Trey in Phish. He lost his chops and the band now sounds neutered and quite frankly, Trey sucks now. Therefore Phish sucks. Maybe Trey can find a way to get motivated and things will change. I hope so.

Are you kidding me? I thought Trey played horrible and botched the show. If you want to actually hear some GOOD Trey playing with Phil, check out Phil and Phriends from April of '99 with Trey and Page.
