whole corn and wheat feed

So I found this place about half hour away selling whole corn and whole wheat chicken feed at $10.99 (almost $11) for a 50 pounds bag. Is this a good price to get some? What is your cheapest place to buy wheat or corn for growing your mushrooms? And if you buy 10 bags he will give you another bag for free. What do you think?

If you're raising chickens it's probably a good deal although more than I pay.
For mushrooms, use rye berries. They're about twice that price but worth every penny. Corn sucks for mushrooms due in part to the high contaminant rates. RR

Yeah, corn sucks, but is rye really that much better then wheat tough? And in what way? I always wondered that, I used both rye and wheat several times and they performed pretty much the same in every aspect. On very small scale of course, I would love to hear if your findings are different. Also, commercial growers use wheat in most parts of the world, because it's cheaper and much more available.

Yes, the corns harbor too much mold spores. What is the price range for rye grain for a good deal? I know it varies by location where we're at.

I wish I still lived out in the boonies, bushels of grain for $15 bucks, tops.

Yup, those days are over with. Prices are going up steadily now. Just called a feed store today to find out they don't carry the rye grains. I'm stuck with the wheat for now. That would be $200 for a ton. Don't even know if that is expensive or not? And what would I do with so much wheat just starting out, right? Cannot eat wheat for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. Not sure if my stomach will hold though.

$200 a ton?
That is $.10/lb, that is a retardedly good deal. I'm picking up wheat tomorrow for $.80/lb, which is about as cheap as I can find it in the city.

"anything under 1 ton (2000lbs)1/2 ton minimum order is .20 cents per lb or $200, ,1 tote can hold 2500 lbs @.18 cents / lb .$450for full tote ( 2500lbs) have go to warehouse."
Not sure what he said but it seems like .20/lb. if under 1 ton tote. And over a ton (2500lbs) is .18/lb. He is willing to lower it to .16/lb if order a tote full. Because he don't want to put too much inside the warehouse for inventory cost to go up. My problem is what to do with so many wheat? I will need 18 of those 55 gal barrels with lid to store them all. Oh, well.

Just ask him if you can buy a 50lb bag, grow some edibles, and hit him back with some killer mushrooms. Unless you have a mushroom farm you will never need that much spawn.

Well, he's a grain farmer. So rather than dealing with small quantity for his time, he choose to deal in bulk. I would goto the smaller rancher that have them available for $11 for a 50 lb. bag. Still good wheat grain though. But for one dollar more per bag. They will give one free bag after I buy 10 bags from them.
