Bulk Questions
    #18856400 - 09/18/13 12:36 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've looked around and I can't seem to find any pictures or info on when Rye seeds are fully colonized, so do these look fully done to you?

They've been colonizing for 13 days now.

Also, I had a couple questions on bulk...

I plan on doing Coco coir/verm for my casing, some teks I've looked at say to pasterize/sterilize... others don't.

I don't really get the whole "Pasterization" thing, so I was wondering if I should just pressure cook my verm and coco coir?

i dont have much info so i cant say for sure but i dont think they are 100 percent colinized.

as for the sterilize/pasteurize look at the thread i just created.

prity much every thing u need to know about that. just trying to save the best members from repeating themselves over agen.

I see. Thank you for posting that ^ It explains my question.
Now I need to figure out how to pasteurize without a thermometer.

And I still need to figure out when grains are fully colonized. lol.
This is a lot to digest when jumping from cakes to bulk.

You will know that the jar is fully colonized when the entire jar is covered in white. I can still see a lot of in colonized grains in all of those jars

Another thing I just thought of... When you pressure cook at 15 psi it runs at about 250 F (Or so I've read), while pasteurizing is about 170F. Couldn't you just pressure cook at say 10 psi for a given time?

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17246844

no pressure cooking needed "even thow he is using a pressure cooker pot he dosnt put it under pressure"

just need a pot with a tight fitting lid

water cant get hotter then 212 but steam can keep getting hotter.

i use the boiling/steam tek to sterilize my jars since i didnt have a pressure cooker

Read that thread for a quick rundown on why pasteurization is better than sterilization for your bulk SUBSTRATE.  You aren't doing a casing.  Casing is a non-nutritious layer over the top of a bulk substrate.  Just forget the word casing from here on out, never use it again.

yes i agree but umm steam can get hotter the 212

http://www.life123.com/parenting/education/steam/why-is-steam-hotter-than-boiling-water.shtml

all element can be in all FOUR stages of matter. solid, liquid, gas and plasma. increasing or deceasing there temps. H2O can get hotter then 212...

even if the compounds break into simpler compounds or there elements.

Steam, if properly heated, pressurized and contained so that it does not condense back into water, can be heated to hundreds of degrees hotter than the boiling point of water. Steam can exist up to temperatures of about 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Above that temperature, the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms that make water molecules break, creating pure hydrogen and oxygen gases.

not being mean but just doing my research.

mush4brans has been a great contribution lately.

You need a quick rundown on thermodynamics that isn't brought to you by a website called life123.com, but in the form of a physics class.

Do you even read what you post? Do you even know what you're trying to post about?  It is obvious that you are simply googling terms you know nothing about in order to try and prove a point.

Superheated steam has absolutely nothing to do with mycology, pressure cookers, or even the process of producing steam, which is what we are talking about.  It clearly states in your Wiki article that superheated steam does not sterilize.

Now, if we want to talk about superheated water, the process that occurs inside of a pressure cooker, that would be relevant to this discussion.

Superheated water, water that is over 212*F.  Depending on the pressure water's boiling point will be higher or lower than 100*C.  The steam created at that pressure will be the same temperature as the water.

We use saturated steam for sterilization, not superheated steam.

Wikianswers
