Hi there,

I am a lab tech at Aloha medicinals and one of our products is reishi supplements. If you simply buy these you will not need to worry about the dosage since it has been calculated by specialists and nutritionists. We offer free samples too if you call Aloha Medicinals and ask for Alyson. The supplements are better than the tea since more of the B-glucans directly enter the ailing person ( they are not water soluble, so tea is not the most effective means of taking it). I suggest your friend starts them as soon as possible starting with one a day and possibly increasing it to two to help boost her immune system. People drink the tea usually in the morning and at night. There are a lot of studies proving the anti-tumor properties of this mushroom and I think you are wise to try and help her with it. I hope she gets better. Please feel free to call or email Aloha medicinals or PM me if you have anymore questions.

In all my reading, I haven't come across any mention of things they shouldn't be mixed with.

B-glucans are not water soluble? Many things I have read say the opposite; that the polysacharides are water extractable.  What research/evidence is there showing that dry mycelium supplement are superior to hot water extracts, or double extracts (which I feel are the most potent)?

I believe HT_AlohaMed was referring to Tea in his text. Big difference between Tea and extracts.

Right...  But beta-glucans are polysaccharides, which like ALeon said, should be water soluble.  Is there something I'm missing here?

Tea is kind of extract also, it just extracts all water soluble content. Every book I checked says that Beta-clugans are water soluble, at least in inonotus obliquus.

not necessarily.  beta glucans are polysaccharides.  some are soluble some arent.  for instance, cellulose is a 1,4 beta glucan and is insoluble in water.  It turns out that most of the glucans that are capable of activating leucocytes are insoluble 1,3 b glucans with 1,6 side chains.  these 1,3 1,6 b glucans are bad ass!  best results would be to pulverize the fruiting bodies or mycelium of these mushrooms and consume them. NOTE:  the numbers 1,3 or 1,4 are the linkage sites (glycosidic bonds) between adjacent glucose rings that make up the polymer.

^^ Thanks for the info!

So do you think then that it would be beneficial to consume the leftover mushroom mass after doing a double extraction, to get all the stuff you missed?  Like dry it and encapsulate?

I picked a young reishi the other day in the woods and it was soft enough to eat.  I ate it after boiling for 90 minutes and it was not bad.

Maybe eat young reishi before it conks out?

sure.  I eat reishi every day.  I chew it up and suck all the juice out of it and then I swallow it.  Important to either pulverize or masticate really well. We do not make enzymes that break down chitin.  this is why heating and/or pulverizing is necessary.  If you powder it, there is no need to cook it.  The heating or autoclaving  of commercial mushroom "medicine" (a la Aloha) is in response to "food" safety issues, not medicinal effectiveness. Heating doesnt activate the compounds, it just releases them from their chitin cell walls.  pulverizing does the same thing.

Thank you Amanita virosa! Yes the B- 1-4 linkages are not water soluble, and your body cannot even digest them! The B-D-glucans confuse your body and your micro-flora so they are actually digested like fats because they do not dissolve in the blood stream like most sugars which are then taken to the liver for management! This means they go up to your lymph nodes were all of your B cells are floating around and they bump into these little sugars that will not be processed to move into adipocyte cells or be reduced to acetyl Co-A to enter the C.A.C. so they wear them like coats and are shown off to the T cells. The B-glucans are recognized as "not self" by the T cells and the alarm is set off resulting in a cascade of antibody formation (they do not form the head group so they are ready to attach to the next pathogen they encounter)as well as increased white blood cell production and a number of other immune system cells. Now your body is ready to attack anything, but since B-glucans are just sugars, they do you no harm. This is one of the ways mushrooms are medicinal. Hooray for science.
