Check out these NYC apartments

This guy blogs about affordable housing in NYC (and a few other places but mainly New York).
http://www.worstroom.com/
These are actual spaces that are rented out to those on a budget -- many of them are attics, basements, large closets, or even spaces underneath stairs.
How on earth to people live like this? I guess you just go to that space to sleep and that's it? Here's some pictures that will give you an idea.

Could you hack it for a year or two in one of these places while trying to get your feet on the ground in NYC? By the way these aren't pictures of rooms from within the units, but what you see here in the pics is your actual complete space that you pay for rent for.

NYC real estate is nightmarish. Think about it; millions of people crammed into an absurdly small space. Tiny apartments in shitty neighbourhoods will run you $1400 per month in NYC. While unfortunate, and certainly not something I'd like to live in, the places in your OP aren't at all surprising given the area.
And yes, I have lived in equal squalor before, just in a different city. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Those low ceiling spaces are really a fucking trip. Ya gotta crawl around em'. Imagine tripping in one of those. I'd get so frustrated that I couldn't stand that I'd probably end up knifing a hole through the ceiling just so I could stand up.

Definitely not a surprise -- I'm sure there are a damn near infinite number of spaces (most occupied though I'm sure) in NYC like the ones shown above. I guess it's just reality for a city like that.

I've seen apartments like that in Newark. I've looked at several basement apartments that had 6 foot ceilings. I couldn't even stand up in them. I noped the fuck out of those apartments the instant they opened the door. And they're all like "you sure?" And I'm like "Dude, would you live in a place that you couldn't ever stand up in all the way?" "Well... No." Retards.

Yeah my cousin's first apartment had a ceiling about that high (also a basement.) He was fine to stand up in it but I was just a little too tall.

I got a buddy who moved to Willamsburg and lives in a apartment just like some of those photos, and he splits it with another dude to get by on rent. Hipsters are something else.

Hah. Not so great to be a ginger giant afterall, now is it?

I could totally get by in a house with six foot overhead clearance. My own little hobbit house.

I prefer ceilings 10 foot or higher. 3 of the 4 apartments I had in Newark had 12-13 foot ceilings. Current one is 10 feet. I'm picky like that. I like to get dressed and not have to worry about putting my hand in the ceiling fan when I put a shirt on.

All I'm really picky about is a 2-car garage and an extra bedroom for all of my instruments. I can't fit half of my shit into a little shack anymore, so I'm glad those days are behind me. And the days of paying for parking spots. Jeeeesus fucking Christ.

Ive lived in places like this and not even in that big of a city.
I once stayed in a moldy basement, that sometimes flooded and had about a 5'4 ceiling...ground was covered in layers of carpet and padding that soaked up the water when the snow melted. Very poor heating so Id often stay in bed so I didnt need to get out in the cold.

That's what I'm working towards my brudda. Fuck this apartment nonsense. Might be another 8 years, but I can't do this the rest of my life.

I mean I certainly could do it if I had to. Having one of those little ass spaces is infinitely better than living on the streets, but...damn those pics make me claustrophobic just looking at them.
