Check out these NYC apartments

This guy blogs about affordable housing in NYC (and a few other places but mainly New York).
http://www.worstroom.com/
These are actual spaces that are rented out to those on a budget -- many of them are attics, basements, large closets, or even spaces underneath stairs.
How on earth to people live like this? I guess you just go to that space to sleep and that's it? Here's some pictures that will give you an idea.

Could you hack it for a year or two in one of these places while trying to get your feet on the ground in NYC? By the way these aren't pictures of rooms from within the units, but what you see here in the pics is your actual complete space that you pay for rent for.

NYC real estate is nightmarish. Think about it; millions of people crammed into an absurdly small space. Tiny apartments in shitty neighbourhoods will run you $1400 per month in NYC. While unfortunate, and certainly not something I'd like to live in, the places in your OP aren't at all surprising given the area.
And yes, I have lived in equal squalor before, just in a different city. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Those low ceiling spaces are really a fucking trip. Ya gotta crawl around em'. Imagine tripping in one of those. I'd get so frustrated that I couldn't stand that I'd probably end up knifing a hole through the ceiling just so I could stand up.

Definitely not a surprise -- I'm sure there are a damn near infinite number of spaces (most occupied though I'm sure) in NYC like the ones shown above. I guess it's just reality for a city like that.

I've seen apartments like that in Newark. I've looked at several basement apartments that had 6 foot ceilings. I couldn't even stand up in them. I noped the fuck out of those apartments the instant they opened the door. And they're all like "you sure?" And I'm like "Dude, would you live in a place that you couldn't ever stand up in all the way?" "Well... No." Retards.

Yeah my cousin's first apartment had a ceiling about that high (also a basement.) He was fine to stand up in it but I was just a little too tall.

I prefer ceilings 10 foot or higher. 3 of the 4 apartments I had in Newark had 12-13 foot ceilings. Current one is 10 feet. I'm picky like that. I like to get dressed and not have to worry about putting my hand in the ceiling fan when I put a shirt on.

All I'm really picky about is a 2-car garage and an extra bedroom for all of my instruments. I can't fit half of my shit into a little shack anymore, so I'm glad those days are behind me. And the days of paying for parking spots. Jeeeesus fucking Christ.

Ive lived in places like this and not even in that big of a city.
I once stayed in a moldy basement, that sometimes flooded and had about a 5'4 ceiling...ground was covered in layers of carpet and padding that soaked up the water when the snow melted. Very poor heating so Id often stay in bed so I didnt need to get out in the cold.

It boggles my mind how hard a lot of those people work to live in fucking squalor. NYC was probably a really awesome place to live before the rich assholes took the whole island over, but its done. NYC isn't a cool place to live anymore, its just a place with a ton of shit to do/eat. Unless you moved there and kept your place with rent control its a fucking rip off at this point. Who the fuck works their ass off to be poor, I grew up 45 minutes from NYC my entire life and I can't comprehend why the fuck people that make good money struggle to live like this when its so much cheaper to live in PA/NJ/Parts of NY, especially considering how easy the commute is to places that are much cheaper.

I lived in 10X10 dorm with another person for school. I assume these people basically just sleep there.
I don't get the appeal. No way in hell would I live like that. I'd move it Iowa before I chose one of those places.

You live in NJ so you can see how big of a rip off NYC is. Its all the advantages of living in the city without having to deal with the rat race everyday, and being able to have a quite night or go hiking/beach/random shit that doesn't cost a lot or any money. NYC is awesome, but fuck living there.
Also, there is shit to do in the midwest. As long as you have cool friends and plenty of booze it doesn't matter where you are.

Yeah I completely agree with you on the not living in NYC. Every job I applied to in the city had the "would you relocate for this job" I always responded no. I have no desire to live there. Now that I have a roommate (Newbie) my rent costs me $550 a month, everything included but cable. I can be in Manhattan in 20 minutes by train. In Manhattan or even Brooklyn would be at LEAST $1100 each. Fuck that noise.
And no, the midwest is boring as hell. Same shit everywhere, boring landscape, the only culture is farm culture, juggalos, rednecks, and white trash. No thanks.

I never lived there. I lived down south and I was bored as shit in NC and that was near a major city. Either way, its cool to go to NYC and I do love it, but I don't want to go out everynight and it doesn't make sense to pay that much to live like that. It does seem like a good place to be single though. There are a lot of whores that live there.

Yeah but the suburbs suck too. I haven't lived as bad as these places but I have lived with a shit ton of people in a small apartment. I like being able to walk to good bars. The nightlife in burbs blows. You either need to drive to city or take hella expensive cab or wait for first train. You can't find cheap rents in ghetto in NYC? Everything can't be gentrified. Anyway Tokyo has this down to an art form

You're going to the wrong parts of the midwest. Around here we've got a booming local music/art scene, microbreweries and every substance you could imagine. Many of these midwestern cities are being reinvented. I WOULD NOT like to live in the great plains part of the midwest though...that's really boring. Great lakes region is decent.
Here I could go to 5 concerts a week, edm, jambands, bluegrass, jazz, you name it, drink a different local dank beer every day and get any drug under the sun at a more reasonable price than I could out east.

Jesus christ that is some crazy shit. I pay 900$ for a 1600 sq foot home(10 year old manufactured home) on 2 acres with probably another 1200 sq of garages and shops and storage. That and I can shoot guns off my back deck and only 15 miles from a the bit town.
I could never live in those small conditions. I would just want to off myself or become a traveling bum.
