honey mushrooms are like that too. you need to make sure to ID the wood they grow from so you don't get sick.
Chicken of the woods is also like Honey mushrooms in the way that they are parasitic fungi and slowly kill their host trees, however honey mushrooms are much more prolific and destructive... they like to eat similar woods and you need to know your wood to know whats good... they both have to be cooked to be eaten and even when prepared and picked properly, they can still cause poisonings for people who are sensitive to them... its almost like a food allergy, but a bit different and they cannot test you for it, yet... another caution to practice would be to only eat a small amount when first trying any new mushrooms and never over-do it, ever.. there are cases of accumulative poisonings, so you gotta be careful, always... no mushroom is worth risking your health, no matter how tasty it may be... the most delicious are usually the most deadly.. yet you don't see people rushing to eat death caps, even though they taste amazing! ..a few more things to err on the side of caution with: avoid consuming alcohol when trying new mushrooms... and when trying new mushrooms, maybe wait a few weeks before you come to the conclusion that all-is-clear.

They store pretty good, The ones I brought home to experiment with stored for a while, they even continued to grow, attaching itself the the newspaper I had it wrapped in... speaking if which, i might be seeing possible activity with that experiment, too early to say... Keep em in the fridge, maybe in a paper bag, keep an eye on them, the sooner the better, but they might last several weeks, depending.
And regardless of your experiment, I wont be trying it, ever... i know alot about eucalyptus and have no interest eating mushrooms from it, just like i have no interest eating mushrooms from a buckeye.... i have heavily considered Bay Honeys, but its a no go as well for me.... I try to practice extreme caution with a little bit of prejudice to be sure.

Maybe this will help those who were asking about the differences in trees/species? http://academic.evergreen.edu/projects/mushrooms/phm/s66.htm

Ill give you my suggestions on propagation/cultivation experiments if you promise not to eat those at all..... and even still, if experiments are successful, still no eating those mushrooms until they are thoroughly tested to see what the actual results are.
Because Laetiporus sulphureus is variable, taking Laetiporus conifericola or gilbertsonii and attempting to introduce it to an oak does not necessarily mean that it will convert to sulphureus.. honestly I have no idea if its ever been tried, Ive never looked into it.. but I have introduces a Laetiporus conifericola to a valley oak here, right now I have heavy mycelial activity in the area I introduced it, but its also likely just some other mushroom.. its too early to say... but there was no activity at that specific site last year, before introduction... either way, its interesting.

so the plastic bag outer layer was a mistake. shoulda checked on em earlier. the bag mad them really wet with condensation. the two paper bags were soaking wet. so i removed them and put them in a dry paper bad only. remarkably the mushrooms weren't wet or mushy which makes no sense. they are still in pristine condition and ready for me to fry up come friday.

I swaddled the hen of the woods I found yesterday in paper towels and put it in the fridge, that seemed to work well there's no moisture on the towels yet although it has only been 12 hours.

East coast chickens are fine. You're not going to find them growing on the kinds of woods that get people into trouble on the west coast. I think Kuo suggested that actually they are different species on the east and west coast that look macroscopically identical and need some DNA analysis to separate.

Chickens always have a slight a laxative effect on me so I try not to ever over indulge. Over eat and you're flirting with a case of mushroom butt.
