Where would you go?

If you were to just pick up and move (as an early-mid 20 year old), without any debt or responsibilities holding you back, which (US) city would you choose to go to? With an associates degree in your pocket, 15-20K saved up, and a decent job resume (for being young) which city appeals to you most? Rent-wise, job-wise, public transportation, nightlife, etc..

I've heard one of the Dakotas is bristling with jobs and that minimum wage is around 10-something an hour.
That said, Oregon or Cali, and not just cause I'm an on-off stoner.

Oregon, place was fucking beautiful. My visit there last summer was one of the happiest times I have ever been in my life! No snow, mushrooms grow wild, weed is not that big of a deal. People were chill as fuck. I can drive a motorcycle year round.

I plan on moving to one of the dakota's soon and I's HIGHLY advise against it, very harsh drug laws and they just really aren't that great of states.
I would go to either Denver, or Boulder.

North Dakota is booming right now because of the oil fields. I guess places like Mcdonalds are hiring with starting pay over $15 an hour. I wouldnt pursue that though because the cost of living is outrageous now. I have a buddy who works in the oil fields and he said 1 bedroom apartments in some areas are $2000 a month

Thanks for correcting me; major considerations I didn't know about.
Why you goin' there bud?
And man why didn't I think of Colo? They have the lowest population of overweight people AND legalized weed (and come to think of it, I wonder how that combo is going for them... /munchies lol).Quote:

Hmm I briefly thought about North Dakota, anyone else have any say of that state? Would an inexperienced person get a job in the oil fields? ...Didn't realize rent was that nuts though.
Are there jobs in the city of denver itself though? Or would you need a car to drive to them? Do you need a car at all in denver, from what I've read it seems like a yes.

IDK what your job history is like, but I ended up in office jobs from a very young age and now that I'm working at McDonalds, I don't know how I feel about hard work anymore...

hmm, seattle seems pretty legit, but idk if I would be able to handle all that grey. The rain is fine, but people seem to always talk of how grey it is. Beautiful, but dark.

Dude mad fucking respect. I kind of enjoy it myself, but after 2 hours of scrubbing viscous fat deposits from warmer trays, I sometimes long for the days of being a programmer lol.
It's my own fault I didn't simply step up to something more in line with my interests though, and I start something like that in October.
A friend of mine JUST MOVED to Seattle TODAY!!! Which reminds me how awesome it is. My best friend may be there next semester too.
IDK about you but I love... shall we say, somber weather?

i live right next to north dakota and by brother lives there, so I plan on moving in with him soon to save up some money to move to colorado.
North Dakota does have a lot of job opporunities especially with the oil fields, but other than that it's a pretty shitty place to live. Not much to do or see, and the winters are abosolutely horrible. Think -40 degree weather, being outside for more than 20 minutes causing a high risk of getting frostbite. Shits rediculous.

Denver (and CO) in general are at the top of my list right now, but I would want to live close to or in the heart of it all (downtown or capitol hill)...but then for work, it seems like I'd need a car. Which I could drop a few thousand on for a used one when I'm out there if I need to, but I'd rather have that cash in the bank.

It's incredibly vibrant. I get why people dislike big cities but I'm not one of them. I like a big mega-metropolis which is what Chicago is. Transportation is incredible; just walk down from your apartment and hit the subway. Idk man, I made my way through there about 10 years ago and had no idea how cool Chicago was. I thought it was just another city until I actually got to it.
Then I realized it was definitely not your run of the mill, average American city.

Portland area is nice and relatively cheap compared to other metro areas I've lived in. Atlanta is full of opportunities, culture, and entertainment. It's rather pricy, however. I paid $1200 a month for a 2br in a decent area.
What is your degree in and what does your resume look like?

-General studies -Best part would be that I worked at FedEx for 2 years. Package handler then worked my up to a QA clerk/admin assistant while also backing up the trailers onto the dock (that last part I think is a good resume-builder. To be given that role seemed like a big deal, at least at the terminal I was at.) I also could get a good reference from those guys.

IMO, Chicago wins for big cities. Albuquerque wins for small cities. St. Louis is an awesome small city too.
Maybe Seattle, maybe San Diego, maybe Denver Maybe a bit north of SF (like Marin county, meaning not too far at all)
I like most every place I've ever been. Really hope I get to see some more continents!
If i HAD to pick... maybe Albuquerque (again. lived there a bit)
Can't beat seeing hot air balloons all the time in the morning. And the international balloon fiesta every year.

And that food though....

This thread. Seems like he's been there before.
Of course it's got some seriously violent areas as well but what mega-metropolis doesn't? It's a world class city though, trust me. If you're picturing Detroit (and it pains me to say that by the way because I was born in Detroit), New Jersey, or Cleveland you'd be majorly mistaken.

Chicagos public transit is ridiculously convenient and a VERY lax city.
You guys should check it out at least once I mean shit, they gotta ferris wheel and shit
Really nice city though. Great people no matter what color/language you are/speak. Almost as much as New York.
Great pressed pills, great weed, the sky isn't grey every day like NY, and theres still the Lake/Water.
Here's a link I stumbled on a few months ago that I thought was cool- http://greatist.com/health/20-best-cities-20-somethings
If you guys think Chicagos that ghetto, Don't come to St. Louis
Like theres bad parts and yea there's crime but its not that bad if you aren't stupid and friendly.
Have you ever been to Chicago?

Yea I bet too.
I've been to Denver, SF (well my friend's house is in Marin), OC, SD, Portland, NY, Phoenix
Never Seattle. And I'd like to see a lot of the NE. Seen most/all of the Southeast too.
Phoenix is another HUGE city with great cheap public transmit. And the highest percentage of 18-30 year olds. Because of Arizona State and its huge (110,000 a few years ago when I was there) student population basically make up the city of Tempe (Not even a suburb, its a huge city adjacent to Phoenix)
And as someone else said not long ago, there's more acid and every other drug on Mill Ave. (Tempe) on it than Haight Ashbury. Its a crazy street.
You been there Niff?

Nope, haven't been. But this statement alone makes me want to go there this fucking weekend.

If I were you, I'd look into getting a working-holiday visa (super easy to apply for most places, some countries charge some are free to apply) somewhere and get out of the country. With that sort of money, being young and relatively unattached right now, why not go live in another country and work for a while?

And btw Magicman all the places you mentioned that I've been to are tremendous cities and I'm sure the ones I haven't been to are as well. Idk, it's hard, there's a lot of amazing places/cities in America. Probably my favorite place that's not a city is Jackson Hole WY. And the Pacific NW fascinates me as well with all of the incredible forests out there.

I don't have the balls to do that. While I would love to check out Germany or just backpack across Europe in general, I want to check out the US a bit first, get my feet wet with well, being on my own. Hopefully eventually though.

Personally, I'd move to Colorado and get a roommate. Grow and distribute across state lines like a boss

So i've been giving more thought to ND oil work. Is it still booming though? Seems like their starting to want experienced guys and not just offering jobs to anyone who can move. But maybe in the fall a lot of guys quit due to the weather? Housing seems like a bitch too, but it seems like some people make it happen. I'm not afraid of hard work, but I just don't know if its still there (the OT pay)...I've been reading conflicting reports on different forums and some of it is slightly old.
To the guy whos bro is in ND, do you have any other info of this?
Some people seem to be suggesting Texas instead. I'm gonna look into it all more, but if anyones got any info, thatd be good
