Help Me Identify This Possibly Amanita Species
    #1882599 - 09/04/03 07:30 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

I found this in the grass next to a tree ( Three Shrooms ) One is about 10 Inch. Tall with about a 7 or 8 inch cap,all white with skin shreds all over it just like seen on many other Amanita's species.

Pics are real vague- but is part of (if I'm seeing it right) a group of Amanitas that are damn near impossible for the average joe to identify- most have a chlorine like odor and have shaggy white caps and likewise with the stems. Actually at first glance I would have guessed some kind of pholiota but probably Amanita cokeri or some sort of related Amanita. Yeah- I wouldn't eat it if it tried to jump in my mouth and tasted like cinnamon and sugar.

Honestly, with those photos I can't verify even the genus. It looks like either a Lepiota or a Amanita in section Lepidella. Some of the Lepiotas a excellent edibles, but we need more detail to be able to say that's what you've got. The Lepidellas include some dangerous poisonous species, no good edibles, and a lot of unknown mushrooms - they should be treated as if they were deadly poison.

Happy mushrooming!

I was thinking it looked more like a Lepiota than an amanita too.... I should have said something... I'm proud of myself for thinking that when I first read this post.,... with no other replys.... I agree it's tough with the pictures... how about the one where you can see the basal type bulb.... Is that any indication either way... Amanita or Lepiota... ???

I will give you the best description possible. ALL of it was white. The white shred skin fell apart like a wet powder and at point they had veils but they had already broke on all specimens. Tasted tiny peace,it tasted very good like I wanted to eat it. But I didnt. I know it was stupid but I had to try. Skin like shreds all over it(Also on the stem). In the stem when broken in half the inside apeared really airy and sponge like, not solid at all.

Sounds like a Lepoita to me. In general, tasting mushrooms is alright as long as the piece of the mushroom is smaller than the nail on your pinky and you spit every bit of it out after you taste it.

That's actually a fairly good description. The only thing you left out (which might not be significant) is odor, which is often like chlorine or other distinctive things.

Your mushroom is (still not 100%, but close) an Amanita from section Lepidella. Tasting it wasn't a stupid idea (you did spit out the piece you tasted, right?) - we discourage that for the known deadly species. Unfortunately, the Lepidellas are very dificult to ID without a microscope, and they are still being studied by the professionals who will no doubt come up with a pile of new species when they finish. Most of them are unknown as to edibility or toxicity. Since there are very closely related deadly species they should be treated as deadly and you should not experiment with eating them.

An interesting mushroom! Thanks for showing it to us.

Happy mushrooming!

I have seen many Lepoita pics. I have some of them growing in my neighbors mulch bed. These shrooms are definately not them. The shreds are all over as you can see in these pictures. Its something else.

wow those are so neat! if you really want to find out what they are it gets complicated but its very rewarding once you do and you'll learn a lot on the way.

write up a detailed by the book description. Mr. mushrooms has a link to a really good Amanita expert's website with great keys and stuff.

To species tests usually require microcope navigation and stuff, but someone here can probably help you out.

good luck
