Those are gorgeous! I'm not that familiar with North American species, but those are a dead ringer for our Australian Psilocybe subaeruginosa... but there are many species in that group that share similar morphology.

Psilocybe quebecensis!
Fucking amazing looking one too! So much awesome, please please please save some for microscopy... and cultivation. You've found a pretty rare species.
EDIT; They seem almost to big for quebecensis but I still think they might be them "Stipe: 2–3.5 cm (0.79–1.38 in) (4.5 cm or 1.77 in) long by 1–2 mm (0.039–0.079 in) (2.5 mm or 0.098 in)"

LOL Ganzig, you remember correctly!! I'm still not sure if my pics fair very well as a visual comparison as they just seemed to stop growing, I don't know if they had fully developed or the cold got to them or maybe they just realized "what the fuck are we doing growing here" and then they were gone. I'm keeping a good eye out for them early, this year!!

I think they look like these and yours could easily fall within the morphology of a single species.

Reading the replies it doesnt seem like you managed to find a consensus, but judging from the parameters (growing on dead wood, the cold, the bruising, the size of the stem) is it enough to determine its nature or the microscopy would be a must have?
We (me and my friend) could try to send the pics to the amateur mushroom club but we most likely are going to get discriminated in the future if they know we are into this kind of things. So we rather not send them.
I might try and ask my genetic teacher to borrow the microscope if it goes to this
You can always send prints and samples to reputable shroomerites for microscopy, that's what I did!!

Section Aztecorum only leaves two possibilities of species, Psilocybe baeocystis or Psilocybe quebecensis. If they turn out to be quebecensis then I'm really not sure what I found last year.

I think there might be a missing species to taxonomy up in those parts of the globe... There were some interesting "P. baeocystis" finds in Maine a few years back, and then there are the caerulipes, which can be easily distinguished by microscopy. I do not have a microscope, or know enough about microscopy to say for sure, but I think maybe something has been overlooked. I can't find pics of P. pseudoaztecorum, but pictures look so similar of aztecorum to quebecensis. I wish I had a scope!

I agree Hashfinger, I would definitely say they belong to the Aztecorum group, but as you said, "there might be a missing species to taxonomy up in those parts of the globe". IMO, the species I found last year (calling it Quebecensis now) is different from Amphibolos' species or at the very least it is some variation of it, which makes a case of what you said!!

I'd love to see some DNA sequencing on the different quebecensis collections. They seem to be very limited in their distribution, which to me suggests that they are a "sister" of a more widely distributed species, evolutionarily speaking. Now, this other closely related species might be also very rare, but would have a wider displacement across the region, as it seems the "baeocystis" in Maine have. I also want to see microscopy and sequencing of the Maine "baeocystis" and see how it compares to the type collection.

Those look different from yours I agree Wolfdawg. But I also don't doubt species having more morphological variation thrn has been recorded with the few observations we see a decade.
Awesome find Amphibolos! I hope you find more so you can spread the joy! Would love one out west here if you get enough.

So, I have emailed Scott A. Redhead of the National Mycological Herbarium, he is the one who collected the specimen of Psilocybe quebecensis in Gros Morne National Park, NF in which the DNA sequencing has been done on and he has so kindly replied with this "The isolate of Psilocybe quebecensis is one of my own specimens and cultures (SA Redhead # 4635) = DAOM 187850. Caespitose among grass and moss at base of tree along path, 16 Sept. 1983, base of trail to Gros Morne plateau, in Gros Morne National Park, Island of Newfoundland, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, collected by SA Redhead & J.Ginns. I have some notes. Gosh – that was 30 years ago! I have had all the Psilocybe cultures here in our culture collection re-sequenced since Barry and Kim’s study. Sorry about the absence of the CCFC database online. It is not yet back up in standard form." I am waiting for another email and will update any other information!!
