You can safely eat it if you have a gun and a condom with you.

jk yeah they are the chicken. They look a bit manky though.

Eat em up and tell us if you liked it.

And tell us how you prepared it.

The chicken is old and will be tough. I wouldn't, but next year go back in early summer.

What about the chicken makes it look old? the brown spots are mud. I need to clean them up a bit. But I thought they looked and smelled pretty fresh. What are u guys seeing that makes them look old?

Dull color and it looks ridgy and skinny instead of full and plump.

But mostly the color. Get them while they are bright!

Safety first raceme. Safety first

Well its not rotted... just find the tender parts.
I recommend sliced into chunks, dipped in egg, then flour, fried in hot oil, then dipped in wing sauce.
  Chicken of the woods hotwings!
Just made puffball crust pizza yesterday.
Nice finds

maple is fine. just sometimes its better to err on the side of caution when you cant id the log its growing on. maybe cut away the nastier parts of your mushrooms though, they look a bit janky.

although I'm going to eat some chicken of the woods this weekend that was growing on the wrong tree to see if itll get me sick. (its science i swear!)

if it was an exclusively maple grove you should be fine. definitely if you get a less than perfect specimen you need to cut out the bad parts to avoid food poisoning. but thats just basic cooking ya know? dont eat spoiled food

Which kinds of trees should I NOT eat... all I ever see in my area is maples, oaks, pines and sometimes apple... I already know not to pick it from any type of pine. and there was no pines in sight.

poisonings can happen from chicken of the woods species growing on eucalyptus and coniferous trees.  mine came from a eucalyptus stump but they are in such pristine condition im going to eat them anyways and see if i get sick. (who knows i might not have an allergy...i hope)

honey mushrooms are like that too. you need to make sure to ID the wood they grow from so you don't get sick.

I been looking for chicken the whole summer and never found any. I was actually in the woods today just trying to familiarize myself with all the different types trees. I would like to be able to properly identify Elms and dead elms so I can hunt morels. It seems like every maple tree to me has a different bark. same with the trees that look like elm leaves, they all look different to me, and none of them look like any pics or vids I find on the internet... i never even thought of eucalyptus. Im not sure if we have them in NY... But it all worked out, i found the chickens and a big ass puffball. my first edible find

there are also a few different types of chicken in the woods they are discovering. there is a different type in the north east it seems which is different than the western variety.

I have found probably 10 logs with Chickens this year, sadly all have turned to a pale yellow and are mushy. Good to know I will have plenty for next year though!
