Am I magical
    #18852995 - 09/17/13 10:22 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow?
This was found in mossy dirt that was topped with a layer of wood bark/chip.

Gills are cream like the cap, directing upwards to the inside top of the cap.

The stem is thin and spindly yet robust, same colour as cap if not slightly darker. Ranging from a few to 8cm.

The caps range from 4mm to 1.5cm in diameter, they take a creamish brown colour and a bluish brown when bruised. They are rubbery and grippy. There is a nipple which is generally paler than the rest of the cap.

I have been told these are not p. Shrooms but I tripped tits on them last year,  literally all small ones like these :/

Libs are small and can have striations like these but these with the pale gills are Mycena. The ones you picked might have a cool nitrous smell if you stick one in each nostril, if it is perchance a convenient moment to take a passport photo.

Didn't we just have this conversation? Picking those Mycena and bringing them inside is not going to turn them into P. semilanceata. If it had, that would be magic! Liberty caps do not grow off of wood. Here is a couple links that you should study and then you should head to some open grassy fields.

Look, for starters there was one shroom growing off the chip itself, if you read the post it says dirt with chip on top.
Secondly my usual place of picking is vast open moorland which is habitat to hundreds of wild cows and I have picked many fully fledged liberty caps.
And thirdly I am so persistent because after getting back from work and showing these to my fellows they all agree we picked almost all like this last year. You must understand my confusion?

They may look like it to you, but they are not liberty caps. Liberty caps never grow on woodchips. Nor 'dirt'. The ones you found on the moors were more than likely liberty caps. But these are not.

Thankyou for your blunt clarification.

Ambc, those threads are brilliant, thanks.

I am not trying to be a dick, my apologies if I came across as dickish. I do understand your confusion and I can see that these specimens display some features that could lead to them being confused with Libs. In fact when I was new to hunting mushrooms, I picked 20 or 30 mushrooms of a fairly similar Mycena species and was stoked until I got back to where I was staying got out my field guide and went down the list of features. I assume that you, and/or, any or of your friends don't spend most of their time with the fungal kingdom in one capacity or another, because I, personally don't very know many people who do. Most of the people who are on this site regularly and for years, do spend quite a bit of time hunting, studying or discussing mushrooms specifically and fungi in general, that's why we spend time here and that's why you and other people come here to get help in identifying mushrooms.

Bottom line is this: for a mushroom to be a member of a species, it has to match the features of that species 100%. That is every part of that mushroom has to be within the species perammeters for said part. Right off the bat I can tell you that those mushrooms have spores that are white or damn close to white. P. semilanceata(libs) has dark purple brown spores. Therefore these specimens are not liberty caps.
