I need to place an order by tomorrow to meet the drop requirements and don't know exactly which grain I should get for gourmets. Also I'd like to gert wheat bran from there. Any idea exaclty which one I should get. http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/product/12154/ would that one be good? I just don't want to order the wrong thing. I have been using bobs red mill wheat bran I believe its called and wbs. But want to stop going through that hassle. Thanks for any tips.

If you are wanting grain to make spawn then I would suggest Milo or Millet, however in the case of millet, I see only dehulled on the azure website. You need whole grain that has not been dehulled. The milo appears to be whole, but it is my second choice as the size is larger than millet and will provide less inoculation points per unit volume.
Hope this helps.

Man Bob's red mill stuff is so overpriced, I don't even wanna know what you're paying for his wheat bran... I think I saw quinoa from him for like $12/lb once.
OICU - how do you prep your millet? I'd like to give it a shot.

OICU - how do you prep your millet? I'd like to give it a shot.
Easy: - Mix with enough water to cover in a large pot and and 1/2% CaCO3
- boil 10 minutes, stirring to prevent the grain from sticking to the bottom of the pot
- drain on a large screen and spread-out on paper
- add about 2% gypsum and mix
- load into Qt. jars to 3/4 full
- sterilize for 45 minutes @ 15 psi.
All additions listed are a percentage of the grain's original dry weight.

Is it just the smaller grain size that makes you like millet so much? I had problems preparing it during my WBS days and have since gone to triple washed feed oats for $16/50lb bag. Otherwise procedure is the same but I'm always looking to benefit from your experience OICU812.

I use rye. I order/use 100lbs per month from azure standard; I just picked it up an hour ago actually
I would like to try Milo or millet sometime soon though. OICU, no overnight soak with Milo or millet?

Rye berries are fine I use them almost exclusively, they're just bigger so not as many inoculation points as you'd get from a smaller grain.

Yeah I use soft white winter wheat but millet is really a powerhouse with those inoculation points. You get like 5 times more per jar. The prep is way different than larger grains but if you can nail it, its worth it.

Anyone use the bran they carry? I need it for kings mostly but I have been adding like 1/8 cup to each bag. The kings I havent been able to afford to really supplement all the way up to 40 percent or chose not too rather cause the bobs is the only one i've seen. I need to hit up the feed stores as well. Would they carry sorghum?

Check your local coop for bulk bran prices. I get certified organic wheat bran for about $.77/lb; though i do order 250lbs/month so i get a quantity discount. I think without large orders it is $1/lb, best of luck

A 50lb bag of milo only cost me $13 from my local feed store. I just simmer for 30 minutes or so, then let it drain and dry for another 30 minutes. I've used azure rye and wheat berries previously, but found the cheaper milo performs just as well.

Yes, but is that milo organic? The prices change drastically between conventional and OG.

my prices are $13/50lb organic rye berries and $6/30lb organic wheat bran. way cheaper straight from the mill. so that's around $0.25 for the rye and $0.20 for the wheat bran. i'd love to do millet but it's pricier and it takes longer to process than dumping rye and water in bags to sterilize.

Very true and the source I get isn't organic. Considering there is no GMO Milo and it requires a little less pesticides than other crops, it is slightly better than other conventional grains but still not ideal. I put in a request for organic milo at my local feed store but I haven't received a price quote for it yet.
I used to order only organic grain online but I got tired of paying so much for shipping.

@3chnobily: Yes, I like the millet because of the additional inoculation points -vs- milo and I like them both because they are gluten free as opposed to other grains. That being said, many different grains such as rye will do a good job too.
@Aleon: That's right, no overnight soak.
@drake89: Great prices! I wish I were close to a mill.
@CAP_TURTLE: No, rye is fine. I just use millet for the reasons mentioned above.

I just now got around to trying this, boiled for 10min (actually only ended up doing like 7min) and just about every grain was exploded, it looked like anyway. Don't know what I did wrong! Maybe my stove is too strong? Was really sticky feeling, but went ahead and PC'd anyway, and as suspected it's one whole brick that won't break up. Dangit! Any ideas?

Sorry to hear that. Did you spread it out, cool and sprinkle with gypsum before loading into jars?
I bring my batches up to boil real slow. I don't know that it makes any difference, though.
You might want to try running a small batch again except soaking it overnight before cooking.

What is your usual method of hydration? I usually heat my grains up to a simmer or when you can see steam rising from it and keep it just under a boil for 25 mins. That is for wbs. It will be interesting learning to do rye berries after being a long time WBS user.

A couple of links to others who do the same: Rye grain prep How do you do grains in bulk
I did find where RR suggests soaking for just that reason!
Another thread on soaking before boiling with a fairly decent explanation.

No big deal just a jar of grain! I didn't figure I'd get it right the first try with millet that's why I only did 1 jar. I didn't do gypsum, the grain was already pretty much destroyed at that point so I didn't want to waste any more supplies. I may try an overnight soak next time, then just a light simmer for a few min. Also after the 10 min. I wasn't left with much water so that could explain the starchiness. I think if I use a lot more water, more of the starches will wash away when I strain instead of staying stuck on the grain.

I use that exact method (with overnight soak first) for WBS, basically the same for rye except a little longer, maybe up to 40 min. Although I've forgotten about it and had it rapidly boiling for 20 minutes and it did fine. Kinda hard to mess up rye as long as you let it steam dry enough so it's not wet.
