You indeed found a matsutake! the smell is the big give away, I have heard it described as dirty socks before but I think its odd smell is more like a slightly fermented cucumber.

Yes.  Odor?

Perhaps a Catathelasma species?

It smells to me kind of similar to button Agaricus at the store, but less earthy and more mushroomy. Its fairly strong smell i kind of enjoy it.

That sounds like Alan has got it again.
I didn't look the gills at first but they do look slightly decurrent which would point to it being catathelasma. Also your smell description doesn't sound like the odd aroma of matesutakes. Regardless it is a cool mushroom.

True I was also thinking Catathlasma because of the gills but i figured i would give it a shot anyways. Still a cool mushroom but i would rather it have been the real matsutake.

on one of my very first hunts i thought i found a white matsutake simply based on the picture in my guidebook. i was so excited!

then after further analysis i determined it was a young death cap.

thank god for science!

It is not a young death cap. It is the Catathelasma like Alan suggested.

wishful thinking will not get you far in the world of mushroom hunting

(he said while wishfully thinking that his poisonous chicken of the woods wont get him sick)

one of the books im reading about the history of mushroom has this old family quote

(although this quote is a pretty prevalent folk phrase that has been applied to many different topics for many years)

But here it goes.

"There are brave mushroom hunters and there are old mushroom hunters.  But there are no brave old mushroom hunters."

Oh yeah. I read that wrong. You have found a death cap in the past.

It's hard to believe that English is my first language sometimes.

Agreed.
I know several people that know absolutely fuck all about mushrooms, except that they love to eat them, and they pick everything they find in the woods. They have gotten sick numerous times, but that doesn't deter them one bit, they just avoid what they think made them sick the last time.  They think they know what a 'death cap' looks like, and they avoid that, but obviously reading a book or getting the mushrooms identified would take all the excitement and adrenalin out of mushroom hunting.
There was one time when one of these people decided to check with me on a whim, and it turned out that those weren't 'mouse mushrooms' (Tricholoma terreum) he picked, and he almost served his entire family a kilo of deadly Tricholoma.
There are like 5 common larger deadly species where I live, you would really have to try really hard to accidentally kill yourself by eating mushrooms.

"Greg Wright, exception #3 to the rule.
He followed in the footsteps of McIlvaine and tasted over1000 mushrooms in the 1980's.  He got sick about 7 times and once he was really scared.  Unlike McIlvaine he left no written report of his experiment.  Eventually he lost interest in mushrooms.  Last heard he was studying UFOs."
