First time pf tek. 2 questions before I go.

I've read a ton of info here and feel pretty comfy at this. Im going to do the sgfc. I see 70-75 degrees is the a good temp to fruit. I keep my place that temp. If I fill the sgfc with 5 in of perlite correctly thats all ill need to reach 95% humidity? I also cant find widemouth 1/2 pint canning jars. Just the regular mouth. They are the ones that would be easy to remove the cakes. They are taller then the others. Are they alright to use. I can wait to find the correct ones. GT & B+ if any one is interested.

It has to be moistened perlite of course. You really need to use the short wide mouth jars. They work so much better. If you have an ace hardware nearby they sell them. You can also get them off amazon

Oh yeah and a let me tell you a little trick for wetting your perlite that I had to learn the hard way.
Construct your bin to spec (drill 1/4 inch holes on all 6 sides in a 2 inch grid pattern) then set it in the bathtub on 4 cups or jars to elevate it. Pour in your 4 to 5 inches of perlite then add water. You can just turn on the shower head. That is what I did. Run a whole bunch of water in there and mix it around as you do.
Once you feel like you have it well moistened let it sit there and drain for a couple hours. It will act as a large colonder since it has holes in the bottom

Bathtub trick sounds awesome. I was going to do everything to spec in the build.
What about the humidity question?

A properly built sgfc will easily maintain 95 to 100% humidity. A lot of people buy a cheap hygrometer then wonder why it only reads 80% in the sgfc. It is because most hygrometers can't read that high of humidity. My advice to you. Don't buy a hygrometer. Just trust the tek
Does that answer your ques? Not 100% sure what you were asking

Misting... mist the sides of the wall of the sgfc? one pull per wall? How much at once.. ive never seen vids of it going down. I figure do that then fan untill i see some drops kinda go away?Quote:

Yea. You nailed it. Im rather poor at getting my thoughts out. I didnt want to buy a hygrometer. I felt like I should trust the tek. It seems fool proof as long as everythings CLEAN and spores are legit. Like baking cookies.Quote:

Spore Load,
I have 5" of wet perlite (did the same thing psilly suggested, and had my whole SGFC in the shower, rather than using a strainer) and my humidity is looking good. I spray, a vigorous 12 squeezes from my water spray bottle, with the tip turned as fine as it will go, about 3 times a day (wake-up, home from work, before bed) and then fan with the lid for a full minute.
I dont have a hygromemter, I put my trust in the design of the SGFC and it hasnt let me down.

Yeah if you watched the videos a few times then you'll be good. You only have to mist the cakes and the perlite. Not the walls. Mist it really well until everything looks wet and then fan it real well. Don't mist again until most of the prev misting has evaporated
Do you have an ace hardware in your area??

Mist the cakes directly until they glisten. The over-spray also helps keep your perlite hydrated. Spraying the walls is completely useless.

Well anyway Spore lord I seriously think you should try to take the time to get the right jars. It will cut down on your colonization time quite a bit. Those tall jars take forever to colonize and sometimes stall on the bottom. If you do end up using those tall jars make sure you put the substrate in there as loose as you can.

Hardware stores strangely seem to have wide mouth half pint jars when the big chains don't. Try lowes, home depot, farmer supply, ace, etc.

Off Topic.
BTW hasty, I spell checked your thread in my quote. So don't get mad I didn't quote you correctly.
Yeah I actually can't find any 1/2 pint wide mouths here, to many cultivators around I guess.
I use these,

I find that they work just as good, and I have seen faster colonization times with them vs. Half Pint Wide Mouth.
Just remember that is my personal opinion, and results may vary.
I can also fit 7 of them in my PC as opposed to 5 of the WM 1/2 pints.
They have a longer side surface area than the half pints and I feel like they allow for more evaporation of water off the myc, which leads to more pinning. Just my Opinion......!!
Good Luck! Don't forget to post your results.

Hey Spore Lord, I'm in the same place u are with this whole thing. I'm about to start my first attempt, got my SGFC built, SAB built, just waiting on spores, my dehydrator and brf to come. I've also spent lots of time on here just reading and watching all the vids. PF Tek all the way! I also could not find half pint jars that weren't the very short squatty kind. I went with a half pint tapered jar. Not wide mouth but the mouth is larger than the bottom of the jar. Seems Kerr switched up their half pint wide mouth jar design and the cheapest ones I could find on eBay were going for $20. I have seen others on here be successful using jelly jars and the like so I think we will be just fine.
Good luck to you!

Yup. I've went to a few Walmarts around my area on several occasions and all they are stocking are these half pint wide mouths that are about 1-2 inches tall and the jar is wider than the wide mouth! LoL! Apparently the Walmarts around me don't carry the wide mouth half pints other than those. I will check out Ace for my next set of jars. Thanks!

You guys are telling him the tall half pints will be just fine and some people have success with them but a lot of people have trouble with them as well. I have tried both and had much better luck with the short wide mouth. I'm just trying to give him the best chance for success. I think if you can get the wide mouths you should because they certainly work better.

Instead of doing this, I wet mine in the backyard with a garden hose because a lot of perlite comes out the holes and you don't want that going in your drain, or I didn't at least.

I just innoc'd four tall 1/2 pints and 2 short wide mouths as a first grow. I started with the tall bc I couldn't find the wide mouths and had to order online. One tall got contamed but the other three were fine, however the two wide mouths caught up to two of the tall ones even though they were innoc'd 4 days later. Im still waiting for the bottoms to colonize on two of the tall ones. The shorter ones also appear to be healthier and i bet they willl fruit faster, but it was also a different strain of spores.
. However if you're like me a week is too long to wait for wide mouths to arrive in the mail and you might as well get some experience innoc'ing the taller ones - its a little tricky the first couple times (at least was for me) just save/order some more spores for the wide mouths.

For my room, I bought a 3-pack of some small (800 lumen) Daylight CFLs (6500K), and just put 2 in the ceiling light fixture. So far so good.
They do get a good amount of ambient light coming in through the window with a very sheer curtain on it though.

indirect sunlight is fine...unless you are using a room with no windows, you don't need to buy a light. If it's overcast and dark during the day, turn on the light in the room. People will tout the benefits of providing extra light but honestly, you will be just fine with ambient light.

Direct 6500k light during the fruiting cycle will increase yeild. Yes they will grow with ambient light or no light at all but they will grow better with direct light from the proper spectrum
