Grass instead of straw?

Some of us add straw to the sawdust block and i read that, it is like a sort of expressway for faster colonization. Instead of straw, can one use the normal dried grass as a replacement, for ive lots of it.

I think straw in a sawdust block is effective because the holes in the straw allow air to penetrate the block. Grass would not have that effect.

I've used dried grass before. It works, but straw is better. If you have a lot of it, use it. The important thing is to have a varied substrate with lots of ingredients. RR

Lots of ingredients? does that include dried unwanted weeds and plants that grows with grasses? Also does adding dried leaves with the subtrates works well?

You've got to be careful what you throw in there, I know certain mushrooms can absorb certain chemicals from their substrates (P. ostreatus will take caffeine from coffee grounds) so you don't want to throw in random plants from around the farm.
Skim the Mushroom Growers Handbook stickied at the top of this forum, it does a lot of talking about the various substrates, including various agricultural waste products you can use, and some other options that might include a little adjusting.
Good Luck!

I wondered the same thing. Where i live there is also a huge amount of rushes growing in the damp fields...they are hollow inside when dried so i am going to try chopping in some of this with mixed substrate for outdoor beds next spring.

Most feed hays are too high in nitrogen. This causes failure when using pasteurization. Also it can cause overheating. That being said I have used it a up to 20% as a supplement for straw logs.
