No Verm, can I still birth the cake?
    #18847735 - 09/16/13 05:32 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I'm following the RR PFTek videos.
I'm ready to birth the cakes but there is no vermiculite left in the only store in town that sells it.

Can I still birth my cakes without vermiculite?

I'd read some guide on another site that suggested using the verm on top of the jar because it'd been sterilized. Nevermind that the verm was used as a contamination barrier...

It was sterile, but now is filled with contams.

It would still work, fully colonized cakes are contam resistant, but cleaner verm is recommended.

You can use the verm from the top of the cake after putting it in the oven for an hour at 350F

People grew cakes for years without rolling in verm. They will be fine. If you have verm by all means use it but it is not necessary for success. As Prince said you could always take your dry verm layer to the oven and help sterilize it while you are doing your dunk
