Gonna Start Running Again, Would Appreciate Input on Today's Portable Music Players
    #18845255 - 09/15/13 04:31 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I'm wanting to get back into running.  I love running but I haven't really been taking care of my body for a few years and it feels like the right time to get back in shape.

I no longer have a portable media player though, and listening to music while running is a must for me.  I'd like to hear some opinions and personal experiences on music players from the perspective of runners.

I guess I should mention my price range and include what I'm looking for in a music player.  Also, I would use a new media player for much more than just running.  I don't have a smart phone or digital camera (won't likely be getting either for a long time), so something like an iPod Touch sounds appealing but I'm not sure if I want to fuck around with a touchscreen while running, especially with sweaty hands.

- Price Range:  Preferably $200 or less, possibly willing to shell out $250 but we'll see.

- Capacity:  Minimum of 16 GB, maybe as low as 8 GB though.

- Display:  I want the player to have a display, since it won't be used exclusively for running.  I don't want something like a shuffle only player.

- Size/Weight:  Not extremely important to me.  I'd prefer it be not too big to use with an upper arm strap or place in the average-sized pocket of most athletic shorts.

- Durability:  Must stand up to some sweat and the light shock of running, willing to buy a protective case that helps with water resistance.

I'm leaning towards an iPod Touch for a few reasons.  It'd be nice to check my email or look up random shit when I'm in a wifi spot.  I still use iTunes (not exclusively) for some reason and an Apple player would be convenient.  I've used a few Touches and I'm already familiar with the user interface.  I don't have a digital camera or integrated camera on my phone anymore so being able to take quick pics of stuff might be nice.  My main concern is whether or not a touchscreen is a good idea for running even if I get a weather resistant case of some sort.

The only players I've owned were of Sony or Apple make.  I was usually happy with the Sony players I had because they functioned well, and I would buy from them again.  I had an iPod Classic but won't get another because of their tendency to freeze.  I don't have experience with players made by other companies but I'd love to hear anything you have to say about them.

So what kind of player do you use for running (plus other stuff) and why should I get that one?

Get a zune hd 32g.

 kidding.

I would go with a standard walkman. It's controls are easy to use if you're running, and it sounds good. A lot of tech geeks like sansas. Try a sansa?

lol I'd go with the zune hd since it comes with hd radio and zune has this program where you pay 15 a month and you get unlimited songs plus you can get one for 80 on ebay.

Ipod touch 3rd gen 32gb used on amazon is <$100. Works pretty much the same as the new ones. Has the same OS as new ipods starting from 3rd gen. Downside, they seem to break easily (screen especially, headphone jack, random shit)

I use Plantronics bluetooth headphones. Ipod touch headphone jacks go bad easily if they are used a lot. One headphone will go out which is annoying. Every iPod touch (4 of them) I have had, I have had to replace the headphone jacks every 6 months or so with everyday use. Really tedious to solder the bitch in.

Arm-band keeps the sweat off the player for the most part, and the above headphones are made to be sweat resistant. Can put the ipod in a pocket, but it doesn't like the humidity in my gym shorts when running, plus it seems to fly out.

I use in ear headphones, but over the ear would be better imo, my ears hurt after a few miles from the pressure waves generated by the headphones going in and out.

How does the 4th and 5th gen iTouch hold up compared to the 3rd gen in terms of durability?  Is the headphone jack still a problem with newer models?  My brother has a 4th gen with a cracked screen that's been through moderate to heavy abuse that still functions perfectly, so I was considering getting that model.

What kind of music selection does this Zune program have?

Do the newer walkmans have any problems when you add music from Windows Explorer?  The 2009 model I used to have had some minor problems doing this but still worked well.  I hated the software that came with it though.

Why do tech geeks like Sansa players?  Because of the SD slots?

For running, look into a samsa clip. 4 gigs internally and also a mini sd port. FM radio. Perfect for running and stuff.
$30.

The zune pass has over a million songs with a vast genre, as long as its a semi known song it has it, plus you can use the zune pass on the xbox 360.

Oh and this reminds me I have an old zune hd in good condition except a very very thin crack going thru the middle which isn't that noticeable; that I would be willing to trade for some spore prints or cultivation equipment.

I appreciate the offer but I haven't kept prints in over a year and my equipment isn't up for trade at the moment.

I've been looking at the Sansas.

I have a 16 GB microSD card so the price of the Sansa is looking better and better.  I could get a better set of earbuds since my last working pair is likely to die soon and I can't run with my semi-nice over-ears (I have big ears, over-ears are too uncomfortable for exercise).

I'm gonna have to really think about whether I want something like a Sansa or something with more features.  I was thinking I could really use the extra features but I may just have a sort of smartphone envy.  I do find myself in situations where a Touch or similar player would be handy but SD compatibility sounds great :strokebeard:

Just my $0.02, but for running/working out, I'd hate to have something as large as an ipod touch on my arm (in an arm band), or in my pocket.

I use a small, ipod shuffle.  The thing is about the size of a quarter and is light as hell.  It can clip onto anything and the controls are on the headphone line.

The major drawback is that there is no screen on it, but frankly, I don't particularly care.  When I'm working out I don't really scroll through an extensive library.  It's also small (2GB).  But having a few hundred songs for the specific purpose of working out is more than enough.

Brand new ones are $49. Used would be even cheaper.  The cheap cost makes it practically disposable.  If I lose it or break it I don't worry.

I'd get something really small and "cheap" for running, and another nice player for home use.

They like them because of the sound quality. For the price it has really good sound.

I think if I go with a cheaper one for running I'll get a Sansa.  I just can't stand not having a display and for this reason a Shuffle would drive me crazy even if I only used it for running/exercise.  Much of the music I run to is instrumental, and I'll often forget track names from artists I don't listen to with the exception of exercising.  Not being able to check the screen quickly in those instances would just be too annoying I think.  Plus the SD compatibility of Sansa, it's like getting a new player with 20-24 GB of storage for about the price of a Shuffle (I think, since I already have a 16 GB microSD).  I'm looking now and it seems at least some models even play FLAC!?  Damn that's nice!

Getting two different players would solve most of my problems.  While running with a bulky player with more functions and larger song capacity wouldn't be too cumbersome (Years ago I ran with an mp3 CD Walkman in a belt strap, and before that a tape player with AM/FM ), I am worried about weather and sweat affecting lifespan.

I think I may go with a cheaper player for now and just get a smartphone or something down the road to use as my non-exercise player.  I've been using a backup flippy for a few months and that shit has to go, but I'll probably ride out this contract first.

Sounds to me like one of those equipment buildups that may or may not actually turn into working out. You get the most fascinating mp3 player, the most ergonomically shaped shock absorbing running shoes, space age running outfit with micro-pores to let out the sweat, maybe polarized glasses so the glare from the sun won't detract from running ... see where I'm going with this?

Any incredibly cheap second hand player that you get, will be more than enough for your running needs, if you really want to run. If not you, then surely your friends may have older models around that they're no longer using. Spend $20 on a second hand player, $230 for quality nutrition or supplements.

Yeah I was in the same boat and was going to get a touchscreen mp3 player, but I got the sansa and it does the job well. I also like the idea that you don't necessarily have to baby it because if you do accidentally break it your not out $250. It also has a custom EQ which was surprising.

Yeah custom EQ is one of the reasons why I used to like the Sony players so much.

I just bought a Sansa 4 GB.  This thing is pretty sweet.  Also picked up an extra 32 GB microSD card for the hell of it and I'm about to arrange some running playlists.  So far my only complaint is that the clip seems a little flimsy, but the player is really light so hopefully it won't be a problem.
