Wild reishi

I went mushroom hunting today and found a wild reishi.


It was quite pliable, unlike the reishi I had grown to maturity at home, and unlike the dried reishi I've bought at asian markets.

I boiled it for an hour and a half, and when I was straining it out, I noticed the slices were very soft still!

I tasted the tea, which was of course bitter, I make my reishi tea with rose hips and hibiscus.  But then I grabbed a chunk of the mushroom and bit off a piece, and it wasn't bad at all, I'd say it wasn't anything to write home about, but wasn't bitter and the texture was almost like a shiitake.

Has anyone here ever eaten a young reishi like the one above?  I've heard of the young ones being cooked into soups, but I've never actually met someone who has eaten one (except powdered or put into gelcaps).

yeah i nibbled one of the ones i cloned in june like the one you posted.  it was G. tsugae (sp?) and it was bitter as hell.

I recommend eating the young ones like this after you make tea from them.  I dont dry my reishi that I find, I make tea from the fresh mushroom.  Now I will be eating them all as well, they are very edible once boiled.
