Tray tek?
    #18846519 - 09/15/13 09:46 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Can somebody give me directions on how to make Trays?

I would like to just make a bunch of BRF Cakes and then crumble them up and cover them with a casing layer.

Can somebody tell me how to make them step by step (Besides the how to make how to make a PF TEK cake part)

And how do you put a tray into fruiting??

take cake put it in a ziplock bag and break it apart totally and completely.
Case with desired pasteurized casing

Or use a cheese grater and mix with properly pasteurized subs like coir+verm. You don't really need to case them you could just mix it with the substrate. After you case or mix with the sub then put tin foil on for it to consolidate with a few small gas exchange holes wait till it consolidates the sub and then.. Trays can go into fruiting in a SGFC.

How thick should my casing layer be?

And so you're saying that my casing layer is going to turn white even though there are no nutrients in it?

Casing for cubes is usually 1/2-1 inch depending on thick the original sub.  No the casing will not completely colonize the casing you will see mycellium peaking through and you would put of it to fruit when 20-30% of the casing has turned white

Try a mini mono with like four cakes, and two sides with holes drilled like sgfc. Worked great for afoaf, some cat litter jugs are shaped perfect for this. You can drill holes all the way around but just the two sides have worked if It gets a quick fan once a day even without fanning yeilds are decent.

Does the size of the tray matter?? How many pf takes do you think it'd take to do one tray? Just give me a solid guess please.

The myc will grow through it kind of like how it grows through verm on a rolled cake. Why case a PF cake in a tray when you can just dunk and roll it. It will have better surface area like that. If you want to make a try put a pasteurized substrate in with it for a somewhat better yield. Never done a casing layer but I believe they're supposed to be about 0.25in for a tray that would be that small or deeper for a bigger amount but I'm not positive.

The only reason I don't want to do dunk and roll is because I wanna do bulk, it's hard to do 5 Fruiting Chambers with 8 - 12 cakes in each at at a time I think.

If you wanna do bulk you should seriously consider investing in WBS or RGS or another grain and making spawn. It's not expensive to get started and it's cost efficient.

Usual size trays are like 4 to 6 quarts, use four cakes and three quarts of bulk. And don't make the mistake of getting coconut husk instead of coconut fiber. Look into wax paper I like it better than casings

And trays do vary in size, bigger trays need more spawn and substrate obviously. Keep a 1 to 4 ratio and u will be fine. I like 1 to 3 colonizes faster
