so this is what i did in the last 2 hours, cut off a chunk of old fallen dead wood, carved this guy, and colored him with a blow torch.
ideally, id like to have hit him with an angle grinder to buff out a few spots, and possibly refined it with the saw a little more, but it got too late, and i didnt want to piss of the neighbors.
the coloring was all done with a blow torch.
this is my second ever attempt at carving anything at all

Thats awesome dude.
You should carve a mushroom gnome out of a piece of solid oak. Make it really big, a third of it just a spike. Gets some friends together. Go to a public park early morning (3:00 am at latest) dig a deep hole and leave it there. See if you can make it into the newspaper.

Nice, that actually looks like a bear.
That looks like the common bear log carvings I've seen around. Did you follow a shaping guide?

i bought my chainsaw drunk while on ebay, and I Was drinking fairly heavily while using said chainsaw, making said bear.
not that im saying its a good idea, but the idea of "fuck it im just going to cut here, and not worry about it and go from there" got me to knock that above bear out in like 2 hours.
of course, always use safety glasses, and try and keep your hand situated on the handle above the kick back chain arrester thing. Also, i screwed my log to a flat piece of plywood to keep it steadier. i probably owe some eyesight and fingers to those decisions.

yeah, its a pretty big log, larger than i actually wanted to start with, but im just really dealing with fallen dead wood (beetle kill) in my back yard.
there is a retaining post that holds up part of my driveway, and its just the right size, and its just the right height out of the ground. but im willing to bet my landlord would be pissed if i started carving on it....
