I tried to go to the MSSF foray this Sunday in Joaquin Miller Park, but I went to the wrong end of the park and never found them. Here's some of what I found instead while I got lost in the woods.
Gymnopilus of some kind. Green staining was eventually pronounced but had not become visible when these pics were taken. Can someone help me identify this to species?

Amanita muscaria

What I believe to be Amanita pantherina. The cap was visibly scraped when I found it and the flesh remained white. I didn't dig it out of its nest in the pine needles, so no underside pictures.

Your Gymnopilus is G. thiersii, also known as G. luteofolius sensu Wood. It stains green and contains psilocybin.
I didn't know about the mssf foray, I went to a Nerds for Nature meetup at Mt. Diablo this sunday. We couldn't find the group either, but did find some stuff.

I wasn't in doubt that it belonged in this thread. I just got different answers when I used different keys (sometimes G. luteofolius, sometimes G. aeruginosus). Though now that I think about it, "It totally bruised green but I didn't take a picture!" should always be taken with a grain of salt, and I'll be less lazy with the camera in future.

I also like how the stipes go skinny to thicker at the pileus! They yellow gills with the orange. Its easy to see where most of an artists colors originated when hunting fungi!

Gonna go out to SF and check out some possible spots, see what's left, if anything. I dunno about this year, the weather has been weird. Why did we get rain at this time of the year and not earlier? Oh well.

Yea droughts suck, but you should be able to at least see life. I'm going to look tomorrow if it is dry although I doubt I'll see more than pins or mud

Dunno honestly I'm barely an amateur. Walt for the ground to be moist and not wet. Look in areas were there is life. I tend to notice the few I find are by pine and eucalyptus trees. Besides those tips I'm pretty clueless as far as hunting. Also wait till the suns out a day or so.

I'm searching hard for best time to pick. But all It covers is like during or after rain blah blah. I can't find the best time of dAy! My aunt owns a ranch with 500acres so I'm not worried about getting caught. Just not sure if day or night has the spoils of Babylon sorry if this is in wrong thread. So night or day? I guess sunlight may dry them out... But I'm a super noob still

Well I'm sure you want light vs poking through poop in the dark with a flash light... Plus it doesn't hurt to go out more than once. It's nice being with animals. Hell I've never picked a field and would be taken advantage of it every day if I could.
Pasteurized poop is great for growing too.

The mushrooms take several days to grow, so they will be there day and night for a week or so. They are much easier to see in the day though.
The only actives you will find on a ranch in California are Panaeolus cinctulus in piles of horse manure.

:O sounds amazing take me with you! I wish right?
Edit: I would suggest looking into local edibles, especially morel variations, and their habitats. Don't eat anything you don't have the skills to identify! I look forward to your pics.
Also if I'm not mistaken eucalyptus debris causes acidic soil.

Yeah I had no luck there. Can't post pics from my Phone, only allows me to post videos from my iphone5???? But I'll upload pics soon. Lots growing in cow pies, all non active. Saw the biggest agar I've ever seen! And saw a puffball the size of a soccer ball that had already burst. Was like green mold all inside it though.

It doesn't look like a good place for actives.

Maybe if there was a ton of horse shit im not seeing there. Otherwise stick to wood chipped areas.
