Official Bay Area Actives 2013

On a walk today in Oakland. I found two separate P. allenii patches fruiting in well watered areas with wood chips. Most of the fruiting bodies had already dried out a bit, but looks like they came up a little over a week ago. These are locations I've seen P. allenii in before during the fall fruiting. Very very surprised to see them up.

Great first post!
Definitely looks like Psilocybe allenii, with the caps only slightly wavy in maturity and the stems thicker than average P. cyanescens stems. P. cyanescens would be extremely wavy at that stage of maturity. Also since I scoped some from the same patch last fall that makes me even more sure.
Looks like it is time to get out there and check wood chip areas that get irrigated, or receive a significant amount of fog drip.

And down in Santa Cruz . . .

Yes, it's only a stump of Allenii. Unfortunately some greedy bastard (SWIM) ate the cap and 1/2 the stem. It was just one little tiny thing, but apparently it was strong, as indicated by the dark bluing. When I got there, SWIM (who ate it) was stressing out on the white cloudy sky, as it made SWIM feel like SWIM was stranded on Venus, which made SWIM very uncomfortable! Anyway, just a sneak preview of more to come, hopefully!

They look like they are loving those drip-lines.

yes the season is changing and the nights are just starting to get cool enough. I don't know too many places where it's heavy sprinkler action, but i did see these yesterday, and this gets a lot of sprinkler action, near a lawn
Probably a couple more weeks until it escapes the moldy isle at Sprinkler World (tm)

I'm a bad mushroom hunter lol. I stumbled upon this site just out of general interest because I thought it would be a good experience to find my very own shroom. (sense of accomplishment? ) From what i've researched I know I should be looking in wood chips that get a fair amount of water especially since it's the season now. Well, I spend a lot of time in Berkeley and at UC Berkeley and nada... We haven't had a lot of rainfall yet and I hardly see any sprinklers. I've actually been thinking about scheduling a tour with Alan Rockefeller soon in Goldengate Park just to get some hands on experience in mycology. I'm unaware if it's against the forum rules but if anyone around the east bay wants to get together and show me how blind I am I'd appreciate it. I think I'm going to wait until the rain comes to contact Alan though...

It's against the rules to look for hunting partners on the MH&I subforum, though PMs are fine. I suggest joining one of the local mycological clubs (the Bay Area Mycological Society or the Mycological Society of San Francisco). I went on my first group foray this Sunday and it was a lot of fun---I went home with Agaricus augustus samples to clone. (Don't expect to hear much about psychoactive species in this context, but you'll learn a lot about fungi in general and you'll get practice spotting them too.)

It's dry and warm. We need something fitting the basic definition of weather. Soon.

This year the MSSF fungus fair will be Sunday December 8 in Golden Gate Park!
The mushroom identification is Saturday afternoon and evening. If you are into mushroom identification, that is the place to be.
I will be leading a foray with the San Francisco Psychedelic Society Saturday from 10am to 1pm not far from the park. After the foray we will go out for Thai food and bring mushrooms to the fair.
I will be running the psychoactive mushrooms table at the fair again. Applesmasher420 has volunteered and we could use more help. If teaching the public about psychoactive mushrooms sounds like a fun way to spend your Sunday, send me a pm! You will get free admission to the fair saving around $12.
