Sterilization
    #18845235 - 09/15/13 04:22 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Is it a 100% MUST? If I go buy some verm/brown rice flour/ syringe of spores and do everything the PFtek way minus sterilization will I have a 100% failure rate just because I didnt sterilize?

Yes. Just steam them for 90 minutes, you don't need a pressure cooker for BRF cakes.

I would consider that sterilization. I assumed OP didn't want to do this either. I guess thats my assumption...

You could get lucky, but just do it the right way. Not too much effort to steam for 90 minutes AT LEAST, and make a makeshift glovebox from cardboard and plastic wrap or something. Also it is very important to flame sterilize the needle before inoculation - again, it is quick and cheap to do!

We don't spend hours and hours waiting on a PC and put such emphasis on sterile technique for no reason. If you could get away with not sterilizing things, we'd all be doing it.

Just buy a pressure cooker on ebay you can get a decent one for 30 which should be able to hold 6 1/2 pint jars, trust me in the long run it'll be worth it.

Not going to happen. Luck or no luck it is not going to be successful if you don't sterilize the substrate. You will have a 100% failure rate
