boletus edulis? pinophilus?
    #18845164 - 09/15/13 03:58 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all!

First post. I am beginning to do some wild mushroom gathering and yesterday I think I found my first porcinis.

The color accuracy of the photo isn't perfect. The cap color to my eye in sunlight is less maroon and more reddish brown. Any chance I've misidentified these as either boletus edulis or boletus pinophilus? I found them in the mountains of Colorado at around 10,000 feet near engelmann spruce trees. They don't bruise blue or anything. As you can see in the second photo, they have fine reticulations at the top of the stipe.

Am I safe to eat them?

Boletus pinophilus is only in Europe.

You have some kind of species from the Boletus edulis group.

The cap is unusually red.

You can eat them, or you can dry them and get the DNA sequenced and see if it is a known species, or perhaps needs to be described as new.

Thank you!

I didn't realize pinophilus is only found in Europe.

The cap color really isn't as strong as it appears in the photos. The lighting, camera, processing, or some combination of those is responsible for the strong color.

Ok cool!

I am not sure which edulis variety is found in Colorado.  It is super common under spruce these days...
