I'm not particularly paranoid, or maybe I am.
It seems that anytime I try to bring up mushrooms in conversation, it's assumed that I grow the illegal kind.
I'mnot worried about getting in trouble because I'm doing nothing illegal. I just don't want the hassle of having to defend myself to my landlord or anyone else.
To be honest, I'm not sure if my landlord would like the idea of cultivation. You know how people are.
Many public wi-fi hotspots won't even let you visit the shroomery website because it's considered a known drug website. What kind of shit is that? Knowbody here deals drugs. And mushroom cultivation is only a part of what this website is all about.
But, that's the kind of world we live in and so I keep my hobby to myself until I get my own property. I really just don't want to have to explain myself to my landlord or anyone else.

ummmmm.
OP Yes you can grow in an Apt. No you don't need to change the locks. You only need to get a really mean dog.
Who the hell cares if maintenance comes by, they have to notify you three days before entering your APT. Also, if they find anything suspicious it is considered illegal search and seizure, and you are off the hook. Constitution says you need a warrant.

Guys, nobody knows what mushrooms are or look like anywhere I've ever lived. Christ, I got pulled over one time with an LB of dry cubes in a sack sitting beside me on the front seat. If you hide anything, it's going to attract attention. Terrariums should be right out in the open in front of everyone. They're just mushrooms for crying out loud. Your grandma sent you a kit for your birthday.

So what if they did. How much electricity do you think you'll use?
Look at your electric bill or contact the electric company to find out how much they charge per KWh.
The math goes like this:
(cost per KWh) x (bulb watts x .001) x (hours used per day) x (days per month) Multiply the bulb wattage by .001 to convert it to KW.
Example:
If your utility company charges $.095 per KWh, you have 1 bulb at 32 watts running 12 hours a day for 30 days, then,
(.095) x (32 x .001) x (12) x (30)= 1.09
This set up will cost $1.09. Not noticeable on your meter.
This math works on anything with a known wattage and amount of use.

It is not illegal. If they are in your house legally, which if given a notice they are, and they see or smell anything they can report it to the cops. The cops then get a warrant and come pay a visit. Nothing illegal about that. Illegal search and seizure is when the cops roll in with no warrant. Not when a maintenance guy suspects something and calls the cops.

Yeah but the cops would need proof beyond reasonable suspicion to get a warrant from a judge. The maintenance guy saying," Um I don't know what it was but they look suspicious in those tubs with holes." Is not enough to even investigate, much less try and get a warrant.
I grew in a town for about 1 year and live above a cop, and across the street from another in our apartment building. Can you imagine trying to hide all that vermiculite>......

Barely anyone knows what supplies you need to grow mushrooms. Most people won't even question you bringing stuff into your house for the grow. People aren't going to look at you and automatically think that you are doing illegal shit. Just act normal about it, and no one will question you. Act with purpose and like you're doing nothing out of the ordinary. For the grow spot itself, pick somewhere people wouldn't just stumble upon it. I agree with RR, if you go about hiding it, and someone finds it, they will automatically think that there is something bad going on. Something that appears like you are not hiding is easier to explain.

Grains create a smell yes but not an unnatural or peculiar one. Easily identified and dismissed as food which it is. PCs can indeed create noise but it's not that bad, certainly not enough to create undue attention. You're good man.
