Calea Z shrivels then dies. Growing tips?
    #18840853 - 09/14/13 11:49 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I sprouted a few Calea Zacatechichi seeds and once they were approximately 1/4" tall I moved them onto some potting soil. They each shriveled up and died on their own time. I have read that I should have supported them and had a fan on them to strengthen the stems. Is this true? Do you think this good be my issue? Any advice from is appreciated

Pics of recently shriveled seedling.

I am going to buy more seeds and hopefully try this again the right way.

Did you try using a plastic bag over the pot sealed with a rubber band? I always put a few Calea seeds onto a half piece of paper towel then wet the paper towel & put inside a snap lock lunch bag. Keep bag near a well lit window & when seeds sprout transfer them to pot, water & then seal plastic bag over the pot to retain humidity. Hope this helps

From what I've heard this plant is notoriously hard to grow and has a very low germination rate, so congrats on actually getting them to germinate!

The seeds have very tight temperature parameters for germination and growth so I'm guessing its the same with moisture & humidity.

Supporting them and having a fan on would probably help with long term growth and rigidity but it seems like you are having a short term problem.

Id try what Leaves said and use a plastic bag or glad wrap to increase humidity. Maybe try germinating them directly on soil?

Anyway, I've got 50 seeds which ill be trying to grow soon. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the tips. I didn't have a humidity dome on the pot, so when I transferred from the plastic bag to the dome I may have shocked it with the humidity chagne. It took a few days to shrivel up though... maybe I over watered it...

I think I will try half directly in soil and half in a plastic bag next time.

Thanks for the advice. I will post back if I am successful with my next batch of seeds. Good luck with your seeds.

Calea Z is very hard to germinate, but not hard to grow if you purchase a plant. The plant grows in many soils, in many positions and is hard to kill it over watering it you have to have a death finger .

You could use a small plastic glass during germination, buy good type of soil (don't use very old soil) and grind/crumble it without letting small ball. Use sprinkle to water it, soil must be little moist, not wet.
Changing place/condition can stress it..

It def seems like a humidity issue. Plants, even when mature, can shrivel pretty easy if they are used to high humidity and then get moved to low humidity. The fan could have dried them out too. Strong light is best for strengthening them when they are young. You can use a fan once they are fully established and can support themselves. At that size, it was a bit pre-mature. But you live an learn.

btw, the non-bitter calea is easier to grow both from seeds and as an established plant. Bitter calea can be more temperamental and requires a lot more light and water to be happy.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will be careful to match environment next time I move them or just start them off in soil.

Also, I didn't use a fan this time so I think it was just the change in environment that killed them. I was just considering using a a fan for next time, but now I know not to consider until they are much older. Thanks for the replies. I will post back when I get my next batch to sprout.
