Molds and Smells.

So I just read that Frank said,"Trich has a distinct "mint"-like, "fresh" smell that is hard to miss on your grains."
I remember that smell, as I have had some trich years ago from some Monsanto based peatmoss. Didn't know that shit was put in on purpose.
I was wondering if we could all put our thoughts together and make a Smell-O-Log.
Basically the things we have sniffed, and what they looked like.
I had some agar trays that produced some nice pink mold, smelled like baby vomit.
I also have 4 Cakes, that I just birthed and they all smell like a wet damp closet. I have isolated them immediately, They are LK which I have never cultivated, and don't know if that is just how they smell. I have done plenty of hunting in the mountains, and there are some wood lovers that have the same smell.
Any thoughts? If you guys post your experiences I will put a Journal together.

I got some bubbly white mold that turned green (trich?) a few weeks ago and it smelled like fresh earth.

I think this is a great idea. Would really help clarify things when the more experienced growers just tell you to smell it for contams and you have no idea what to look for. Would also help with catching and potentially stopping some contams before they completely take over.
This is also a really helpful resource relating to contaminants.
I'll be watching this one.

Normally, the smell of fresh earth is what you are looking for as far as I'm aware. Trich has a distinct green color to it that makes it quite easy to distinguish from other contams. On the other hand, it has also been characterized to have a distinct sweet smell, and if you are familiar with the smell of mushrooms, should be quite easy to pick out.

From what I have heard, Cobweb actually doesn't have much of a smell to it. However, it is quite easy to spot with the eye, and spraying a small amount of 3% H202 on the area in question will give you a definite answer on whether or not you are dealing with cobweb.
So I guess the Smell-o-log wouldn't be too helpful with that one.

Cobweb doesn't have a smell.
The smell of sweat is bad bacteria.
Trich smells like fresh earth. Sometimes it smells minty to me. It overpowers every other smell.
Most molds don't have a very distinct smell actually. Or not such a smell that will overpower your jar.
This is why molds can "hide" so effectively sometimes.
Also people's sense of smell varies so widely that it's hard to say with the subtle smells.
Basically, if your spawn doesn't smell like the fresh mushrooms of the species you are growing, don't use it.
And that's why, unfortunately, a smell-o-log is not going to do much good IMO
Good thought though.

LoL, This is why its good to have people like you in this community.
Well it was a thought at least.
Back to the LK's, I wouldn't say they smelled bad when I birthed them, just more umami than normal. Like a salty mushroom smell.
IDK could be bad, have to wait and see.

I imagine it could be helpful, if nothing else, for us nooblets to identify any smells we experience. Fair enough it won't make any difference to the jars, but it may give the cultivator an idea of what the problem was - like maybe whether it is fungal or bacterial..

Eh, I let go of the urge to identify every contaminant a long time ago.
Bacteria, fungus, etc..if it's not supposed to be there, then that shit should get tossed and sterile procedures should be checked.
Most contams I've run into have very little smell, but still cause problems. This is my point

Hehe, while I agree that it is more or less pointless I am definitively still at the stage where I want to figure out anything and everything
