As procedure I always soak my grains in diluted coffee for cubensis and was wondering if this has any beneficial effect for gourmet or medicinal fungi. Planning on starting the soak tonight, any thoughts?

I add coffee to everything, even my liquid cultures. Hasn't ever hurt from what I can tell!

I have tried adding coffee to just about everything, and can see no difference in side by side tests of bags with coffee and bags without coffee. Can't see that it either hurts or helps. It seems to be a mycologist's placebo.

Aloha would add about 0.5% calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by dry weight to their milo grain before cooking. Regular egg shells ground in a coffee grinder will work for small volumes. Use about 3/4 oz. for every 10 pounds of dry grain.

Thanks for the input fellows, definitely will try gypsum (usually add this to my subs) and calcium carbonate in the future.

After soaking but before bagging I throw in a metric handful of gypsum per 10kg of grain. It helps to soak up any excess surface moisture as well as being a required additive for spawn. Pic 97kg (210lbs) /54 bags of grain bagged and ready on the wheely-trolley for the tank.

Agreed, I always add gypsum to my subs to deal with excess moisture. But my handful is imperial..lol
