Nah I'm in a shitty ass situation cause in Israel the army is mandatory and I got stuck in a unit I hate that doesn't really do anything most of the time. Its a waste of 3 years and I want to switch units but its ridiculously hard and I've tried speaking to as many people as I can with no help. I technically volunteered to do the army and am now getting fucked and regret the decision if nothing changes.
I have one of the highest preliminary test grades so have no clue why they stuck me into that shit hole. Well I sorta do but still. I don't wanna waste 3 years of my life and if I leave the country at this point back to the USA that means I can't come back to Israel for at least 7 years, if not more, without getting arrested and that also means many reprecutions as well.
They don't want to let me switch units and I'm just feeling more and more shitty every day and its just a terrible situation.

Israel began a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip on 3 January 2009. Israel rebuffed many cease-fire calls and both sides declared unilateral cease-fires. A total of 1,100-1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the 22-day war. After 22 days of fighting, Israel declared a ceasefire. Hamas vowed to continue the battle if Israeli forces did not leave the Strip. The conflict damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes, 15 of Gaza’s 27 hospitals and 43 of its 110 primary health care facilities, 800 water wells, 186 greenhouses, and nearly all of its 10,000 family farms; leaving 50,000 homeless, 400,000-500,000 without running water, one million without electricity, and resulting in acute food shortages.

The U.S. initially blocked the 30 December 2008 ceasefire proposal at the U.N. Security Council. Arms and munitions from such bases can be handed over to Israeli use in case of an emergency.[5] Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip was allegedly made possible by weapons supplied by the U.S.:
"Israel's intervention in the Gaza Strip has been fueled largely by US supplied weapons paid for with US tax dollars," says a background briefing released Thursday by the Arms and Security Initiative of the New York-based New America Foundation.[6]

There is only one military and its holding the entire world hostage. Squabbles over jurisdiction are meaningless. It's the same effect. Innocent people die so that rich, "People." can get richer.

No guys, this is what I was afraid of. I didn't start this thread to get into a political discussion. You guys honestly don't know anything just what the news tells you which is setimed far from the truth. I wouldn't know much more but I have the experience of living here.
Also the only reason I joined the army is cause my family and friends are here and this is the only way I can stay.
Also because there are so many people in Israel who do not want to draft or can't be combat soldier for various reasons are are also so many "jobs" in the army not related to war at in any way what so ever. This is why I was asking for specifically Israelis for advice cause I am almost 100% sure the IDF is unlike any other army in the world.
Doing nothing means guarding 10 hours a day for 2y 4m with exceptions.
Again this isn't a topic for political discussion please.

I am Israeli born but lived in america basically my whole life. I am thinking of doing that but as I mentioned earlier its not a simple decision.
That means leaving behind my friends and family. I still have family back where I lived but its cousins and aunts. My dad is still I'm the US while my mom is here (they are not divorced), my brothers and sisters are in Israel too. Defecting to the US would mean what I mentioned in the op...

Something inside of the intellegance corps is what I would have preferred but now it would be extremely difficult to get there because of the beauracracy and you need 4 months to take various tests before you get accepted so its too late. Besides that maybe a soldier teacher, which is a job where you live in a boarding school and help the kids with homework and do activities every so often and stuff like that. Maybe an fighter jet technician. There's thousands upon thousands of jobs in the IDF apart from what I know and there is definitely some that I would be happy in, not be a waste of time and even possibly help me in the future.

Almost all of my immediate family moved here. Almost all of my friends are here.
I didn't blindly draft and say here I am take me. I did different programs that are supposed to help lone soldiers like myself into getting a job better fit for them. No one so far has been able to help me in my situation.

Plant trees. Work at the national power plant. Volunteer at a medical marijuana farm or dispensary, I hear they're picking up in Israel. Become a doctor, teacher or any other profession that's useful for the community and/or country, as you call it. Become a Na Nach and spread techno-joy to the people, from your awesome techno van. Anything that doesn't involve becoming a trained murderer. That would have been my approach at least.
Anyway I'm having some trouble understanding this concept of volunteering for something that's mandatory anyway. Sucks for you OP, if you happen to be in a country with mandatory military service. I hope you find a safe way out of it asap.

I was born in Israel, my family moved to america when I was 9 months old. I live in america till I was 15 when I moved to a boarding school in Israel for international students. I specifically asked them if I would need to do the army after I finish highschool because of my Israeli citizenship, seems like they just wanted me to come to the school so said I would not need to.
12 grade comes and I realize I was lied to and now my brother and sister moved to Israel.
I could have went back to America but then I would not be able to be back in Israel for a minimum of 7 years. my mom has now moved go Israel and my grandparents have been.
most of my friends from the boarding school stayed to do the army.
so now I'm in this conundrum, leave the country and leave my family and friends for what will most likely be forever or join the army. I decide the army.
now I realize I don't see them enough to make it worth my while, and could be doing something useful in my life cause the unit I am in really seems useless.
that is why if I was in another unit if might be more useful and more time to see my loved ones. there are plenty of jobs that even let you go home everyday. some are also a waste of time if not most but there are plenty that are amazing jobs.
that is how I am technically a volunteer.

I thought it was only two years of service, but eh I don't know much. It sounds like you're stuck in this squad, maybe try to negotiate for only staying in for so long then seeing about a transfer. My friend was in the Idf through Nifty I believe.

Maybe they reserve the best jobs for those born, bred, and raised in Israel. Possibly second or third generation Israelite's are given preferential treatment.
The fact that you come from the obese dog, wagged by the docked Israeli tail, doesn't count for fuck all in the scheme of things.

OK I see your point but no not exactly. before you draft you take some tests and have interviews and based on that you get "grades". they check basically logic and stuff like that. I got almost the highest grades on both and still got stuck in this shitty ass unit.

Which is why I made such an assumption.
Do you know of others that got assigned to better "units" that were not Israeli born and bred?
I wish you well, and may the time pass quickly untill you can get back to your preferred way of life. Good luck.

It doesn't matter what unit you're in. You're still wasting three years of your life, as well as the entire lives of many innocent people, children and stuff.
You are only able to be saying this, because some time long ago some one was killed for the land you now live in. Like all land in all of history. Be a little more respectful of world history before you start spewing nonsense.

yeah my friend who came to Israel the same year I did has an amazing job. he was a lot more qualified so Im not complaining about not getting the same job as him although I would have probably liked it a lot.
he's pretty much a genius, graduated high school at age 17, came to Israel and instead of doing army right away he went to college. having a degree before the army in Israel is pretty rare so it makes him more valuable. he's been in the army a week longer than me and is already the equivalent of the first officers rank I think while I am still a private.
besides that yeah I know more average people from the states getting good jobs like I prefer.
is there something that's the opposite of karma? get a lot of shit at a younger age and have it all re-payed when I'm older lol? cause I was never really bad.. I don't know why I keep getting screwed.

there's yer out
while travellin' india, i met many an israeli who got early discharge for mental health issues
most of them hadn't been faking though--their time in the idf had seriously effed them up--look at it this way, you either milk your way out now or get tossed out later when your mind legitimately snaps
fuck the idf
side story, i hitched a ride with a canadian guy once who unwittingly joined the idf because he wanted a cheap refridgerator
he was living in israel with a jewish wife--they wanted a fridge but due to import taxes, many things are super expensive in israel--but! a special coupon book is available to citizens, to allow them to buy things are more reasonable prices (at least it did then)
he became a citizen to get that book and didn't look over the fine print
cue three years of checkpoint duty in the west bank

holy shit that sucks haha.
I think what you said is my only option for now but again the problem there is in Israel since the army is mandatory jobs ask, where were you in the army what did you do and all that fun stuff.
if I go out for mental health issues then it might effect my future if I stay here or end up returning if I leave which is why I just prefer a job I can be comfortable in.
if that doesn't happen then I think I will have to do some shit at the psychologists.

an early discharge will almost definitely be a blight on your record if you choose to remain in israel

Be thankful you're not being forced to murder children

There are no girls commanding tanks in the army here, so excuse me if i call this story BS. I cant say there was never innocent blood spilled but IDF never for killing citizens so if there was an order given to shoot kids the only people that should be held as responsible are the commander which gave the order and the soldier himself which obey this order. Well lets not get into politics...
OP, there are few ways, i wrote to you, but didnt know really much before reading here, if the situation is pretty shitty you can ask for a form to fill to move you, the process will be like this: they will deny it, you should press the issue, make problems and even not come (nifkadut) and as 90% of the time go to jail to show you are serious, then after some time you will get other job, hopefully a better one... Let me tell you this, everywhere in the army you feel like you are waisting your time...
