I've been using Linux and Windows side by side for about a decade now, I in my personal experience, the Linux installations invariably cost more administrative time as they fuck up at some point due to incompatibility in updates, weird problems that turn out to be known but require an hour's worth of CLI hacking and lack of driver support for common hardware. And don't tell be the latter is because the hardware manufacturers are lazy; it's bullcrap. Fact of the matter is that Microsoft, with its devilish centralized, power-hungry extortionist practices just does a better job at making sure their OS'es run on current and legacy hardware.

How many people pay $120 for a retail copy of windows anyway though? I'm pretty sure most Windows users just buy computers that have it preinstalled, and the portion of the computer's price that goes to the OS can't be anywhere near $120.

True. I've had issues with ATI drivers malfunctioning, but overall, linux has improved a great deal to the point where common users can install Ubuntu or a similar derivative without issue. Currently Linux Mint 15 fails to reconnect the wired internet after sleep on my laptop, so I have to fuck around and figure it out but I think it's worth it honestly. Linux is slowly becoming more accepted, and eventually open source software will compete directly with proprietary software.

Did you figure out what the wireless card in the computer was exactly? There probably is a windows 7 driver for it somewhere.

That's the thing, with Windows 7, it probably natively installed the driver and it just worked out of the gate. Half the time you don't even need to install specific drivers aside from GPU and aftermarket wireless/LAN because everything just works natively. At least the laptop wireless always does In my experience with many different OSes over the years, Win 7 has to be one of the most seamless when it comes to drivers

It always pains me to admit it when MS does a good job, but I agree with this. It actually seemed to be somewhat of a leap forward in functionality, as well-- at least if you're running a reasonably powerful machine. It takes advantage of high-end hardware in a way that no previous version has, IME.
I also once bought a really cheap netbook and it came with Windows 7. Jesus, that was awful. They put Windows 7 on it because it's NewTM without stopping to notice that the puny thing couldn't run Windows 7 for shit. I wish it had come with XP.

Windows 9 should be really good, going by Microsoft's track record.
I think they still have two more throwaways to go.

My experience was that 7 ran fine on a netbook as long as all the visual effects were turned off. I had a 8.9" first gen Aspire one with 1.5 GB ram, and I would say it was just as responsive with 7 as with XP. I ran it on a 1920x1080 monitor after the screen broke, worked fine for some light browsing, low bitrate video and old games.

Yeah, I turned them off first thing and it still chugged like mad, even if I was just browsing or word processing.
I'd like to reemphasize that it was a really cheap netbook, even by netbook standards.
