time to move on....

Now that I have finally mastered the WBS process, it is time to move on to my next shroom adventure. Agar Tek! And long term mycelium storage. Went to the store today and bought some bags of agar, wheat flour, potato flour, and gypsum. Been reading a lot on the agar tek. But for some reason cannot get into the agar FAQ link. Is it dead?
Wondering who is new like me and working on the agar now? I'll start small to make 12 of the 1/4 pint size jars.

Are you going to the top left of the page then > growing mushrooms > general cultivation > agar and culture storage?

Oatmeal agar works good, hard work to prepare, but mycellium loves it
Good results each time

I am very new to it as well and have had great success. I use agar flakes and Malt extract (MEA)

Already look into the agar and culture storage. It is not the same as agar faq. But that is o.k. since I have notes on this process already. Too much reading sometimes.
Oakmeal is good I heard. Going with the easy route first for the learning experience.
Why use agar flakes when they have the cheap telephone agar (25g) per little bag? Then any ingredients to enhance it is up to you to add later.
Need to do this as simple and less time consuming as possible for a successful batch. I'll bet there is a better and more simple way to do this one. I'm still new and learning. Let me know if you have it, o.k.

By reading over FH thread, it makes since to use Millet in your agar, if i understand right (Complete noob trying to understand it all before jumping in w/ agar)...Using PDYA and then switching to MEA your growth takes time to adjust to it's new diet...so by using millet instead of say Malt Extract, your not having to let it adjust to the new meal plan. *Sorry lack of knowledge has me calling shit "It" or maybe i'm too stoned...any check this shit out: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18676888/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/5

Well, I am new too. Don't worry there. I'll get it right somehow. Interesting you said "switching meal." I'll be putting in a WBS mycelium grain onto the agar jar. Then divide the pieces into more agar jars. It will be a fun learning process. One question I have is do you put the agar jar outside at room temp. after inoculation?

When you put your WBS onto agar, your two mediums for which myc is feeding is different...no? And when you switch back...eventually your myc is going to be used to feeding on MEA...there for slowing down to adjust to it's new diet.?.back onto the WBS, when ever that may be. If using Millet flour instead of Malt your myc shouldn't have to readjust too much.
I think if you are taking a grain from your jar to agar, why wouldn't the same theory work for it? You'd think taking colonized grain and moving it onto Millet agar, that it would rapidly grow, and switching it from dish to dish to get your isolate, and then throw it back into Grain Jars...would it slow down any? or would it keep loving the meal plan...I've been reading where they're switching from one to another, some seem to take off more rapidly and then slow down on others.
I'm sure someone will let us know if I'm not making any since, and what to do. It makes since to put in warmer temps, 75-80ish...no?

Yes, they are in 75-80 now. I have never thought about switching from one medium to the next that will affect their growth rate. And they have to adjust to the new media back and forth. You think it will matter that much? This is a good experiment to learn something from. Since the WBS are majority wheat seeds with sorgums and not many millet seeds the myc should do just fine after the transfer. I bought the wheat flour also seeing this instead of the millet flour. I also bought an electric grain grinder 8 years ago from an estate sale but only used it one time. So I can grind the WBS into a flour too if needed be. It is easy to do and not much time spend going through that 745 H.P. grinder for a quick process. There is a lever to adjust the size of the grinded grains too all the way to a powder form. Then they can go through a sifter to remove the coarse grains from the fine WBS powder. I don't need that much for a few grams every once in a while. Maybe I'll call this my enhanced WBS tek. Or has it been done here already? Then everything will be the same so hopefully does not affect anything along the way. What do you think? If this does not work then next time I'll switch over to the coffee agar to see how fast they will grow.

I use MEA and transfer to popcorn and they seem to do fine with switching "meals", in fact they take right off in the popcorn

Good job. Keep us posted on how fast they're growing. What else are you putting in with the agar powder?
I have read about popcorn. How do you cook or process them? Is there a specific brand you use? What if I grow them myself? Because popcorn is very easy to grow in my area. I'd tried that before with good result. Maybe I'll try the dent corn next time. They have more sugar in them.
