Upgrading Computer

I recently received a free desktop computer from my father in law which is the HP Pavilion p6510y computer. I have games that do not run on it the way that I want them to, namely Skyrim and the Total War series. Here is a link for the specs on the computer itself. I know that for the big price items I need an upgraded graphics card and an upgraded CPU. I also know that upgrading the RAM will help and while a 1TB Hard drive would be nice too, I'm good with a 750GB for the time being. I'm looking at one of the "I series" (I-3, 5, or 7) and definitely an NVidia Graphics card. Money is of no object, but I can only buy one at a time and there will be a two month or so delay between buying the two of them. So first question is which should I buy first, a new Graphics Card, or a new CPU? And then for each, what are recommendations? If I can keep the CPU as it is that would be fantastic, but I know that with higher end graphics cards there will be bottlenecking.

If all you're playing is Skyrim then the CPU is straight

You might want to or have to replace the power supply unit.
I mean if you want to put in a powerful graphics card and expect it to run i'd start there

this is what i just bought. super cheap and i'm pretty pleased with it. I can play Empire Napoleon, and Shogun on high settings, Rome 2 on medium, but the damn game still isn't optimized. if you looking for something real cheap i'd check this out.

The games that come out in the future will probably scale around the CPU he has. Eventually the thing would be optimized to play those games is what I'm saying.
All he needs to do is have 8gb of ram and a graphics card which may or may not need a newer power supply based on how much juice the graphics card takes up.

You can't swap the CPU without also swapping the motherboard, and if you're planning on that, I hope for you that the Pavillion that you've got will accept a 3rd party motherboard.
A graphics card upgrade is probably going to be more feasible and will make a more distinct difference and won't be as much hassle/risk of incompatibility (if you know what you're buying).

Yeah this. The PSU that came with the computer is probably something shitty.

If all he uses his computer for is school work and videogames his CPU & harddrive should operate normally.
My friends used to put 300 dollar gpu's in computers that took like 10 minutes to boot up
but even back in the day my other friends said the factory powersupply is usually shitty.

Yeah I had a PSU from a HP computer die on me after running it for a while with a big graphics card, would not buy a pre-made desktop again. The PSU is not a glamorous thing to quote in the specs really so they just put in whatever will run the original hardware for a while I think.
